Look at the work

The scourge suspended before the shock

The drummer stands almost exactly in the center. His spread legs stabilize the body, while his arms and the handle of the flail draw a long diagonal up to the top of the canvas.

The barn frame forms a rigid rectangle behind it. Outside, a blue sky and a ladder introduce depth; on the ground, the yellow sheaves follow the direction of the gesture.

Van Gogh transposes here an engraving after Jean-François Millet belonging to Travaux des champs. It retains the very readable action of the model, then gives it new energy through color and material.

The Van Gogh Museum lists the canvas under s0171V1962. Its format of 42 × 28 cm and the references F692/JH1784 allow it to be identified unambiguously.

The flail handle connects the lower body to the upper beam. The tool seems to extend the arms and enlarge the worker's movement.

The frontal posture makes the silhouette immediately understandable. Blue-green clothing stands out against the yellow straw and light walls.

Posts, lintel and barn opening form a stable structure around the action. The movement thus seems even more energetic.
