Look at the work

A tiny dwelling facing the immensity discovered by the tide

The house is located in the lower left corner, partially hidden by the green slope. All the rest of the canvas opens towards the beach and the sky. Tiny figures, distributed in the distance, give its scale to the shore.

Light blues and cream yellows mingle on the damp sand. The reflections do not form a continuous mirror: they appear in horizontal passages, interrupted by matte areas and some pink accents.

The subject announced by the title takes up very little space: Monet makes the cabin a starting point for measuring the luminous void of the beach at low tide.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately off-center framing

The house is thrown into the corner, while the vast shore dominates. This apparent imbalance gives the composition its modern opening.

02

A depth almost without lines

Changes in value between sand, water and sky are enough to organize the plans. The horizon remains low, soft and discontinuous.

03

Figures reduced to keys

Walkers are not described individually. Their vertical accents measure distance and animate the light surface.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image of 2000 × 1635 px was encoded as a true WebP at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the small ladder of the cabin

She must not become the enlarged center of the scene: her modesty facing the shore is essential at W686.

Color02

Preserve transitions between sand and water

The blue, cream and pink passages must remain flexible so that low tide maintains its wet surface effect.

Matter03

Keep the figures as very fine accents

Their dispersion and size create depth without interrupting the feeling of open space.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza collection documents La Cabane à Trouville, low tide, oil on canvas from 1881, 60 × 73.5 cm, signed Claude Monet 81, CTB inventory.1987.3 and Wildenstein catalog 686.

Stay01

A return to the Normandy coast in 1881

Monet has known this region since his youth and finds there the beaches, cliffs and tides which nourished his first seascapes.

Registration02

Claude Monet 81 in the lower left corner

The signature and date are visible on the dark slope, near the lower edge of the canvas.

Provenance03

From the Ernest Cognacq collection to Carmen Thyssen

After Ernest Cognacq and several galleries and collections, the painting was acquired in London in 1987 then joined the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza collection.
