Tree trunks with ivy, F747Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

In the invaded garden of the asylum, Van Gogh frames the base of the trees and a carpet of ivy: no spectacular horizon, but a dense surface of greens, ochres, blues and reds.

Look at the work

An undergrowth looked at ground level

The frame cuts the trunks before their tops and brings the viewer closer to the low vegetation. Several trees rise from ground covered with ivy, leaves and grasses; depth is built by their spacing and by small, brighter holes.

The paint is applied thick, often wet on wet. Short, curved touches repeat over the entire surface, while a few longer verticals define the bark. Blues and reds circulate in the shadows and prevent the green from becoming uniform.

This undergrowth makes the most ordinary motif of the garden a field of almost abstract rhythms, where every touch belongs to light, foliage and depth.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Kroeller-Müller Museum describes these undergrowths as "eternal nests of greenery" and emphasizes impasto that is fluid, lively and placed moist on moist.

01

A horizon removed

By cutting the treetops and reducing the distant view, Van Gogh transforms the soil and trunks into a continuous surface.

02

Network keys

The small oblique, curved or vertical marks follow one another like a weft, differentiating ivy, herbs, light and bark.

03

A colorful shadow

Blue, purple, red and brown appear among the greens. The darkness of the undergrowth thus remains colored rather than black.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

KM number 100.398 and references F747/JH1763 identify the small horizontal undergrowth of the Kroeller-Müller Museum, distinct from the large versions preserved in Amsterdam.

Gender

The undergrowth

Van Gogh painted this motif in several periods: he deliberately framed the low vegetation, the ground and the base of the trunks.

Location

The garden of Saint-Paul

The canvas is made in the lush, weed-filled garden of the Saint-Rémy asylum.

Technique

Thick and wet on wet

The museum notes a muddy material and a moving touch whose small marks form a dense rhythmic pattern.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must recreate depth with variations of touches rather than with rigid contours, and retain blue, red and ocher accents within the dominant green.

  • Trunks cut by the upper edge
  • The ivy carpet in the foreground
  • Small curved and oblique touches
  • The bright gaps between the trees
  • Red and blue accents in the shadows
