From an apartment on rue de Rivoli, the gaze plunges into the paths, ponds and groves of the Tuileries gardens. The Marsan pavilion stands on the left, cut by the edge of the painting, while the town extends into a thin clear frieze under the sky. Monet transforms the regular design of the French park into a mosaic of ochres, greens, blues and pinks.

A bird's eye view where the paths order the crowds and the foliage

The Marsan pavilion occupies the left edge like a large stony vertical crossed by blue shadows. At its feet, walks and statues are reduced to light touches. The very high horizon line reserves the majority of the canvas for the garden.

Ponds, flowerbeds and paths form successive curves and axes. The tiny figures punctuate the paths, while the trees are built in green, yellow and red-brown masses. In the distance, the roofs and monuments of Paris vibrate in a bluish mist.

The regularity of the garden provides the framework; the touches of color give each tree, statue and walker its moment of light.

Diving allows you to simultaneously see the routes of the park and the city. The characters lose their individuality and become accents that measure the scale of the paths.

The facade is not centered: it enters from the left and acts as a vertical upright. Its mass balances the horizontal extent of the park without closing the perspective.

A palette from the mid-1870s

Blonde ochres, varied greens, blues and pinks are juxtaposed in short touches. The museum compares this range to that used by Monet in his scenes in Argenteuil at the same time.

Dark greens, yellow greens, reds and pinks coexist. This diversity prevents the beds from forming a single uniform layer.

Dated 1876, this oil on canvas measuring 54 × 73 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under inventory 4016 and classified Wildenstein 401.

Victor Chocquet makes his fifth floor apartment available to Monet. This height gives the painter an unusual bird's eye view of the Tuileries and the roofs of Paris.

The stay inspires four paintings. The Marmottan Museum describes its version as the most accomplished, particularly for the balance between the pavilion, the skyline and the order of the park.

Collection03

The Donop de Monchy donation

Eugène and Victorine Donop de Monchy gave the painting in 1940. The work, signed lower right, today bears the 4016 inventory.
