An old customs officer's house appears on the edge of the Varengeville cliff. Monet sees it very closely and places it in the left half, under an immense sky laden with sea air. The pinkish gray walls, the purple roof and the turquoise grasses respond in small touches, while the sea and the horizon become almost invisible in the light.
Look at the work
The building is off-center and seen slightly from below. Its large oblique roof leads the eye towards the middle of the canvas, where the coast disappears into the atmosphere. The fireplace and gable wall provide the few firm verticals of a scene dominated by short gestures and inclined lines.
The sky takes up more than half the size. It is not empty: bluish whites, grays, turquoise and pink overlap in a luminous mist. In the foreground, the greens become more saturated and the touches thicker, which brings the slope closer together without resorting to a precise drawing.
Monet does not place architecture on the landscape: he passes the same light through the walls, the grass and the sea air.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet had already painted this house in 1882 and returned there in 1897. The close-up point of view allows us to compare not only the weather, but also the evolution of his touch towards a freer and more atmospheric material.
The slope of the roof responds to that of the land and directs the composition to the right. The chimney slows down this movement with a small reddish vertical, essential to the balance of the building.
The Art Institute's scientific notice notes the importance of white in mixtures. It brightens the sky, walls and vegetation without standardizing them, giving the impression that salt spray crosses the entire surface.

The boundaries of the roof and walls are readable, then dissolve into neighboring keys. The reproduction must maintain this tension between architectural solidity and atmospheric vibration.
The wall receives roses and purples, while the grasses alternate emerald green, blue and turquoise. The sky brings these families together under a slightly cold white light.
The Chicago technical study describes passages where Monet scraped or wiped away the still-soft paint, causing underlying greens to reappear. These irregularities give the cliff a lively texture.

This information concerns the Customs House in Varengeville of the Art Institute of Chicago, inventory 1933.1149 and Wildenstein 1455.
Dated 1897, the oil on canvas measures 65.6 × 92.8 cm. Monet signed and dated it in orange-red in the lower left corner.
The little house dates back to Napoleonic times. After its customs use, it was used by fishermen to shelter and store equipment, isolated above the Normandy coast.
Monet devoted several paintings to this same motif. The 1897 revivals retain a close point of view, but profoundly modify the light, the density of the air and the relationship between the house and the cliff.
