A small cabin with warm walls and a red roof clings to the edge of the cliff of Varengeville-sur-Mer. Around it, the pale green sea and the silver sky occupy almost the entire canvas, bathed in afternoon light. Painted in 1882, this 54.5 × 80 cm oil on canvas belongs to the Musée d'Orsay and is deposited at the Musée national des Douanes de Bordeaux under the number RF 1985 14; it corresponds to Wildenstein 737.

The red cabin becomes a tiny landmark facing the expanse of the sea

The building is concentrated in the lower left corner, surrounded by grass and rock walls. Its oblique roof, its two chimneys and its light facade form a compact whole. To the right and above, no other construction interrupts the marine space.

Pink, orange, yellow and green give warmth to the cabin and the cliff. The sea mixes blue, sea green, white and pale yellow with long horizontal and curved touches. The bluish gray sky extends this range with a deliberately very soft contrast.

By reducing the cabin to a colorful presence at the edge of the frame, Monet measures the luminous immensity of the sea and the vulnerability of the construction exposed on the cliff.

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay precisely identifies the site represented. Monet returned several times to this small construction during his 1882 campaign.

The signature is in the vegetation zone, under the cabin. It accompanies the oblique movement of the cliff without interrupting the maritime opening.

Anonymous donation to the National Museums in 1985

The work received the number RF 1985 14, was attributed to the Louvre Museum then to the Jeu de Paume, before being deposited at the National Customs Museum in Bordeaux.
