Claude Monet · Pourville · 1882 · W731
A light cabin, almost buried in the cliff, dominates a vast blue-gray sea which merges with the sky. Monet lowers the architecture in the composition and reserves almost two thirds of the canvas for the luminous expanse of the English Channel. Painted in Pourville in 1882, this oil on canvas measuring 61 × 81.9 cm is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under number 1984.341 and corresponds to Wildenstein 731.

Look at the work
The cabin is located to the left of the center, in a hollow of the promontory, with its red-brown roof and its facade facing the sea. Around it, the land descends in green, purple and ocher masses. The high viewpoint almost removes the beach and gives the impression that the house is floating on the edge of the void.
The sea is covered with long horizontal touches of blue, turquoise and lilac, punctuated by white ridges. Above, the sky takes on the same colors in a lighter material. A few pink and purple flowers light up the embankment, while the red signature stands out in the lower right corner.
The subject isn't just a customs hut: Monet pits a tiny human shelter against an almost limitless marine surface, then connects the two by the cold light of the coastline.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The skyline is above the center. This decision enlarges the sea and keeps the cabin in the lower part, as if the coastal landscape completely dominates it.
The embankment forms an irregular diagonal from the left edge to the center. Its shorter, thicker keys contrast with the horizontal bands of the sea and make the transition very readable.
Blue, purple, pink and pale green replace neutral grays. This circulation of colors between sky, water and vegetation produces the cool atmosphere of a clear but changing day.
Reference image
A single exact image of W731 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 3,000 × 2,258 px, reduced from the open file of 3,811 × 2,868 px associated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art notice, without artificial enlargement.
The house must remain nestled in the relief. Enlarging it or completely clearing its facade would cause the promontory scale and the feeling of isolation to be lost.
Wave ridges are not simple white lines: they mix with blue, lilac and sea green to maintain the depth of the sea.
The foreground is constructed by short, oblique markings, as the sea advances in longer bands. This difference in gesture separates materials without hard contours.
Documented benchmarks
The Metropolitan Museum of Art documents Cabin of the Customs Watch, oil on canvas from 1882, 61 × 81.9 cm, inventory 1984.341 and catalog Wildenstein 731.
The Met links this painting to a group of fourteen compositions executed by Monet on this sector of the Normandy coast in 1882. Each version shifts the point of view, the weather or the balance between the cabin and the sea.
The modest construction served as a landmark for the coast guard. Monet chose it less for its architecture than for its spectacular position between the plant promontory and the marine horizon.
The painting entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art by the bequest of Julia B. Engel. It has since had the inventory number 1984.341.
