A hanging herring responds to the two fish lying in the foreground

The central vertical leads from the hanging link to the fish's head. Below, the two lying herrings open in a fan shape and occupy the width without additional accessories.

The black background contains blues and browns visible in the brush strokes. The scales receive touches of yellow, ocher and cream which give the smoked fish its characteristic shine.

Smoked Herring F203/JH1123 is a 45.6 × 38 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves it under the inventory KM 101.004.
