Two little girlsReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two young girls sitting pressed against each other in front of a simplified landscape. Their blue dresses, light headdresses and dark contours give this double portrait an almost sculptural presence.

Look at the work

Two faces close together in a colored square

The little girl on the left, wearing a pale blue hat, looks straight ahead. The one on the right wears a white yellow headdress and turns her face slightly. Their shoulders and arms overlap, almost completely filling the foreground.

The background is reduced to trees, a barrier and a few houses treated in flat green, yellow and blue areas. Van Gogh separates the shapes with dark contours; the ocher faces are shaped by short touches of red and green.

The proximity of the models and the almost square format transform the scene into an image of solidarity: two distinct individuals united in a single silhouette.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Musée d'Orsay keeps this double portrait under the inventory RF 1954 16. This is the F783/JH2051 version, distinct from the second F784 composition today in a private collection.

01

Child-level framing

The two busts are cut very close to the hands and shoulders. This close-up view gives the little girls a monumental scale despite the modest dimensions of the canvas.

02

Two headdresses, two characters

The blue cap frames a frontal and serious face; the yellow headdress accompanies a more turned and brighter face. Van Gogh differentiates the models by a few differences in pose and color.

03

Blue as a link

The two dresses use neighboring blues but different touch rhythms. The blue green background takes up these tones and unites the figures to the landscape without erasing their contours.

Documented benchmarks

Deux fillettes is an oil on canvas measuring 51.2 × 51 cm painted in Auvers in June 1890. It bears the references F783/JH2051 and the inventory RF 1954 16.

Version

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the supple contours, the differences between the two headdresses, the distinct blues of the dresses and the warm little touches of the faces.

  • The pale blue hat of the little girl on the left
  • The large yellow white headdress of the second model
  • Blue dresses constructed with vertical touches
  • The simplified green landscape behind the figures
