Vincent van Gogh · End of 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Two diggers among the trees, F701Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two men in blue give off a stump at the foot of large trunks: Van Gogh makes physical work a compact focus in the middle of a vertical and almost calligraphic landscape.

Look at the work

The gesture of the diggers at the foot of the trees

The two workers are leaning over a stump, one pulling or striking while the other pushes his tool. Their modest size contrasts with the trunks which rise to the upper edge and occupy most of the painted sheet.

Behind them, the fields of Saint-Rémy are spread out in pale bands up to the blue hills. The silhouettes of a few birds punctuate the sky. In the trees, black, blue and red contours follow the bark; on the ground, touches of yellow, green and ocher intersect around the work.

Unlike the Bêcheurs after Millet F648, F701 shows a scene observed or recomposed in the landscape of Saint-Rémy, dominated by the power of the trunks and the stump.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The verticality of the support and the size of the trees transform the two figures into an integral part of the undergrowth rather than into isolated heroes.

01

Very low figures

Men occupy the lower third. Their curved backs respond to the roots and concentrate all the action around the stump.

02

Monumental trunks

The large central tree is constructed by beige, blue and black bands; its width gives an imposing scale to the landscape.

03

An open horizon

Between the trees, the almost white fields and blue hills create a luminous breath behind the dense foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Inventory 70.158 and references F701/JH1847 identify the Detroit canvas, often also called The Diggers or Two Men Digging Up a Stump.

Support

Marouflaged paper

The work is painted in oil on paper, then lined and fixed on canvas; this support explains its direct touch and several lighter passages.

Subject

A strain to extract

The tools and gestures do not simply describe digging a field: the two men work at the foot of a felled tree.

Collection

Tannahill Legacy

The painting entered the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1970 through the bequest of collector Robert H. Tannahill.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the very particular hierarchy between large trees, small figures and distant fields, as well as the freshness of the paper visible under certain touches.

  • The two leaning blue silhouettes
  • Stump and tools in the foreground
  • The massive trunk that divides the composition
  • The pale fields visible between the trees
  • Black birds scattered in the sky
