Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · August 1882 · The Hague, Netherlands
Two women dressed in dark advance among tall green and brown trunks. The figure in the foreground, loaded with a light cloth, turns slightly while his companion sinks into the undergrowth.
Look at the work
The nearest woman occupies the lower half of the canvas. Her black dress is cut out on the ocher path; a hat or shawl frames her face almost entirely in the shadows.
Further on, a second silhouette is placed between the trunks. The trees form a succession of vertical green, yellow and red bands, while the ground is painted in wide, curved touches.
Two Women in the Woods F1665/JH181 is an oil on paper mounted on a 35 × 24.5 cm panel painted in The Hague in August 1882. It belongs to a private Parisian collection.
Composition, touch and color
The scene combines the study of figures and the study of the forest. Dark dresses offer stable masses in the middle of a network of vertical trunks whose colors animate the entire background.
Its almost black body forms a large triangular silhouette. The small light package she wears becomes the brightest point in the central area.
Smaller and higher in the image, it indicates distance. Its color partly blends in with the trees, which accentuates its distance.
Van Gogh does not describe every bark. It juxtaposes olive green, yellow, red-brown and black to build a dense but vibrant forest.
Documented benchmarks
The references F1665/JH181, the paper support and the dimensions of 35 × 24.5 cm identify this version from 1882. It belongs to the group of undergrowth studies carried out around The Hague.
Van Gogh painted and drew several women under the trees during the summer. Variations include a girl in white and edge studies.
The paper, then fixed on a panel, allows rapid work in front of the pattern. The modest dimensions reinforce the character of study taken from life.
The catalogs place the painting in a particular Parisian collection. It is therefore not attached to a public museum.
