Look at the work

Two wild plants elevated to the rank of subject

The stems rise almost to the upper edge and form two irregular verticals. The pink-brown path crosses the foreground, while the countryside unfolds in colorful bands.

The leaves are constructed by touches of green, black and gray, blue. The red and purple flower heads respond to the warm accents of the fields and break the paleness of the sky.

Painted in Arles in August 1888, this oil on canvas measuring 55 × 45 cm is cataloged F447a/JH1551. The work belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh brings the gaze of an ordinary plant closer to the main architecture of the landscape. The pattern connects botanical study, path and agricultural extent.

01

Thistles construct the vertical format

Their high stems organize the entire canvas and force the eye to move from the ground to the sky.

02

The landscape remains synthetic

Fields, bushes and paths are reduced to bands of color that bring out the jagged leaves.

03

Complementary tones give shine

Dark greens, yellows, reds and purples reinforce each other without academic modeling.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F447a/JH1551 must be distinguished from Thistles F447/JH1550, another canvas from August 1888 measuring 59 × 49 cm and belonging to the Niarchos collection.

Catalog

F447a/JH1551

The dimensions of 55 × 45 cm and the two rods in the foreground identify this version in a particular collection.

Series

Two paintings of thistles

Van Gogh painted F447 and F447a at the same time, compositions close but different in their framing and structure.

Arles

A roadside study

The painter treats a wild plant with the same attention as orchards, harvests or cultivated flowers.

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the serrated silhouette of the leaves, purplish flowers and colorful bands of the landscape without smoothing the touch.

  • The two tall stems
  • The serrated black green leaves
  • Red-purple flowers
  • The pink brown path
  • Yellow and green fields
