Three pale trunks rise out of the frame, surrounded by yellow, pink and red foliage whose reflections descend into the Epte. This oil on vertical canvas of 92 × 73 cm, today in private collection, is the Wildenstein 1308 version of the Poplars series.
Look at the work
Monet tightens the framing until removing the tops of the poplars. The three barrels become vertical axes which connect the dark bank, the reflective water and the clear sky. The main group shifts slightly to the left; the branches and colored masses, however, prevent the composition from becoming symmetrical or decorative.
The season is read less in the design of the leaves than in the color ratios. Lemon yellow, reddened orange, salmon pink and a few cold greens respond to each other around the lilac gray trunks. In the water, these shades extend into more melted vertical touches, interrupted by the blues and greens of the surface.
In W1308, autumn is not a picturesque background: it becomes a colorful light that passes through the trees, the bank and their reflection.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
By cutting the peaks, Monet places the viewer at the level of the bank rather than in front of a panorama. The height of the poplars mentally continues beyond the canvas, while the reflection extends their trunks downward.
Monet painted this motif in 1891 near Giverny, after the Meules and before the Cathedrals of Rouen. The twenty-three canvases cataloged W1291 to W1313 compare very different frames, seasons, wind and states of light.
The catalog raisonné distinguishes this composition by its format of 92 × 73 cm, its group of three trees and its autumnal effect. It should not be confused with W1307 kept in Philadelphia nor with the square versions W1309 to W1311.
Reference image
Only one image is used: the documented public reproduction of W1308, converted to a true WebP of 2,388 × 3,000 px from the source of 4,348 × 5,462 px, without artificial enlargement.
The barrels are shaped by grey, pink and muted green. A continuous black line would isolate them from the foliage and make the air circulating around them disappear.
The yellows and reds are tempered by the creamy sky, the dark green bank and the lilac passages. Fidelity depends on this balance between warmth of the leaves and freshness of the water.
Under the bank, the colors stretch and break. They must suggest the trunks and foliage without copying them exactly, because the current transforms the shapes into vibrations.
Documented benchmarks
The reference documents an oil on canvas from 1891, 92 × 73 cm, kept in a private collection and cataloged Wildenstein 1308.
The number places the painting in the last vertical group of Poplars, immediately before The Four Trees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Monet observes a row of trees near Limetz. The stable pattern allows him to follow the transformations of color and atmosphere throughout 1891.
The current location is not made public. The sheet is therefore based on the catalog raisonné and the reference reproduction, without attributing the work to a museum.
