Look at the work

Tiny figures reveal the dizzying height of the coast

The cliff fills the entire left half and falls almost vertically towards the beach, where other silhouettes disperse. The summit carries a large villa, a second construction and a few walkers; the sea opens to the right.

Green, ocher, pink and blue fragment the relief. The light chalk appears in vertical bands while the sky and water receive more flexible passages. A warm, isolated sail balances the red roofs.

In W759, houses, walkers and sailboats do not tell an anecdote: they give a human measure to the cliff.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Two levels of human presence

The figures on the plateau respond to those on the beach, which are much lower. This tiering is enough to make the height of the wall felt.

02

A cliff that goes beyond the role of decor

The rock mass occupies the foreground and shows its colorful strata. The landscape is observed as living matter, not as a distant panoramic view.

03

A balance between land and sea

The large left mass is compensated by the luminous expanse of the water and by the sailboat. The framing remains open despite the weight of the promontory.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W759 is used. The real WebP measures 1,200 × 962 px and retains the houses, figures and sailboat without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve very small figures

They must remain readable when zoomed in without becoming detailed. Their size is the key to the relationship between plateau, cliff and beach.

Color02

Keep the colored verticals of the chalk

White, blue and purple descend into the wall. Melting them into a uniform gray would cause the relief and light to lose.

Matter03

Maintain the sail in counterpoint

The little ocher touch on the sea balances the roofs. Moving or enlarging it would change the breathing of the right half.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Kunsthaus Zürich documents La Falaise à Dieppe, oil on canvas from 1882, 66 × 82 cm, signed Claude Monet 82 lower left, inventory 2252 and Wildenstein 759.

Location01

The cliff west of Dieppe

The museum notice places the relief above the beach, to the west of the city. Monet observes it from a low point which accentuates its verticality.

Collection02

An acquisition from 1932

The Vereinigung Zürcher Kunstfreunde allows the canvas to enter the Kunsthaus Zürich, where it is numbered 2252.

Architecture03

The Normandy coast without erasing the present

Monet preserves houses, fences and walkers. These modern elements coexist with the geological power of the site.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 759 version
  • The villa and the walkers of the plateau
  • The figures scattered on the beach
  • The sailboat isolated in front of the cliff
