Claude Monet · cliff of Aval · 1885 · W1018

The Downstream Gate seen from the W1018 summithand painted reproduction

The viewer stands almost at the edge of the Étretat plateau: rocks and warm grass occupy the lower left corner, then the wall plunges sharply towards a turquoise sea. At the end of the promontory, the Porte d'Aval opens like a narrow cut, crossed by a pink ray. This painting from 1885, 65 × 81 cm, belongs to the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-21 and appears in the Wildenstein catalog under the number 1018.

Look at the work

A dizzy stone leads to a bright opening

The foreground is very close: we can see the roughness of the ground and the vegetation beaten by the wind. This warm zone acts as an unstable platform before the cliff falls; further on, the sea becomes almost flat and accentuates the difference in altitude.

The central wall is shaped by short touches that change direction. Bluish blacks mark the hollows, greens appear on damp surfaces and pinks illuminate the edges; Monet thus uses color to render the relief without closing the shapes.

The W1018 version transforms a famous site into a physical experience: the nearby promontory gives balance, the wall causes a fall and the tiny arch offers the only way out into the light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A first tactile shot on the edge of emptiness

The reds, ochres and greens of the left corner are applied vigorously. They immediately bring the terrain closer together and make you feel the painter's position at the top of the coast.

02

A wall that occupies almost the entire height

The central massif connects the plateau to sea level without gentle transition. Its actual height can be read in this steep vertical and in the reduced scale of the arch.

03

A sea structured by long horizontals

The blue, green and purple lines soothe the right half. Their apparent calm accentuates the colorful turbulence of the rock and carries the pink reflection downwards.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only reference image comes directly from the Museum Barberini; it measures 3,000 × 2,399 px and is published as a real WebP, without oversampling.

Composition01

Respect the section of the promontory on the left

The nearby edge should remain partially off-camera. Refocusing it would lose the impression of an observation taken from a real and risky location.

Color02

Keep the sky pale and low contrast

The sky constitutes a broad visual rest. Too drawn clouds would distract attention from the wall and the light passing through the Downstream Gate.

Matter03

Preserve the fine pink reflection in the sea

This discreet vertical connects the opening of the arch to the surface of the water. It must neither disappear nor become too bright a band.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This sheet concerns version W1018 of the Museum Barberini, oil on canvas signed and dated 1885, measuring 65 × 81 cm and inventoried MB-Mon-21.

Observation01

A view taken from the summit of Aval

The southwest orientation allows Monet to integrate the edge of the plateau, the rockfall, the arch and the horizon into a single trajectory.

Light02

Sun passes through the opening of the Downstream Gate

The museum emphasizes that Monet is waiting for precisely this moment. The ray becomes an isolated pink touch, taken up in the reflection of the sea.

History03

A painting acquired by Jean-Baptiste Faure in 1886

The famous opera collector and singer buys the work directly from the artist; this early provenance precedes its entry into the Hasso Plattner Collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The same clearly identified original W1018
  • The rocky ground very close to the left
  • The vertical fall towards the sea
  • The pink ray and its reflection
