Reproduction details

The Cliffs of Petites-Dalles W621hand painted reproduction

Under a sky crossed by blue-gray clouds, two cliffs of the Côte d'Albâtre frame an active beach: cabins and fences on the left, walkers on the shore, small silhouettes near the waves. Monet is not looking for a deserted shore; it confronts the human scale with masses of chalk and rough seas. Signed and dated "Claude Monet 1880" lower left, this oil on canvas measuring 60.6 × 80.3 cm is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under number 06.116. It corresponds to Wildenstein 621.

Look at the work

The monumentality of the cliffs meets the life of a seaside resort, rendered by a few figures caught between the shore and the waves

The nearby cliff enters from the left edge and occupies almost the entire height. Reds, pinks, greens and blues run through its chalk without respecting a uniform local color. Further on, a second, colder promontory advances into the sea; its reduced size measures the distance and opens a narrow escape towards the horizon.

In the foreground, dark beach constructions, a passage of planks and standing figures introduce clear verticals. The sea, treated in pale greens, whites and blues, breaks into small oblique waves. The figures in the center are precise enough to be recognized but open enough to mingle with the rhythm of the keys.

The Boston Museum has preserved this painting since 1906. The confrontation between shore equipment, walkers and cliffs makes W621 a sensitive document on Les Petites-Dalles before the more solitary views painted by Monet in 1884.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The nearby cliff acts as a stage curtain

Its slope descends towards the center and simultaneously reveals the beach, the second cliff and the sea. It locks the eye just enough to reinforce the depth of the coastline.

02

Figures give the scale of the landscape

The small group standing near the water and the silhouettes scattered on the shore make the rock masses measurable. Monet paints them in accents, without transforming the navy into a detailed genre scene.

03

The sky and the sea share the same movement

Clouds and waves are constructed by fragmented blue-gray and white gestures. Their rhythm links the top and bottom of the image, while the cliffs bring more vertical and warmer surfaces.

Read this specific version

The single image exactly represents inventory 06.116, photographed with the object's visible hardware limitations. The 1600 × 1208 px file remains at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, then is encoded as a real WebP.

Composition01

Respect the presence of beach facilities

Palisades, cabins and dark passage are not incidental details: they anchor the date and the busy nature of the place. Deleting them would turn W621 into an imaginary coast.

Color02

Maintain the separation between the two cliffs

The distant promontory should remain colder and less contrasted. This atmospheric difference creates the depth behind the large colored wall in the foreground.

Matter03

Keep characters at the right level of precision

The center group should be read without faces or detailed clothing. Silhouettes that are too sharp would distract from the light and scale of the shore.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston documents Les Falaises des Petites-Dalles, oil on canvas from 1880, 60.6 × 80.3 cm, inventory 06.116 and Wildenstein catalog 621.

Stay01

A first campaign of approximately fifteen days in September 1880

Monet comes to Petites-Dalles with his brother Léon, linked to the village. This stay inaugurated several returns to this portion of the Côte d'Albâtre in 1881 and then in 1884.

Registration02

Signature and date lower left: Claude Monet 1880

The MFA notice confirms the inscription visible in the reproduction. She clearly distinguishes this version of W621 from the cliffs painted in 1881 and from the group W903 to W905 executed in 1884.

Provenance03

Acquired from Durand-Ruel in 1894

Denman Waldo Ross bought the painting from the merchant in Paris or New York. He gave it to the Museum of Fine Arts in 1906; the work has since been listed as inventory number 06.116.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Wildenstein version 621 and inventory 06.116
  • The nearby cliff crossed by roses and greens
  • The second blue-gray promontory in the distance
  • Walkers and beach facilities from 1880

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal navy is suitable for a living room, dining room or wide entrance. A blue-gray, light sand or earthy pink wall and dark wood frame are reminiscent of chalk, clouds and shoreline constructions.
