Étretat, the beach and the cliff of Amont W1012hand painted reproduction

From a promontory above Étretat beach, Monet looks towards the Amont cliff. The large pink and blue wall rises to the right, its luminous door advances into the sea and a curve of pebbles strewn with boats joins the foreground. Painted in 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 69.3 × 66.1 cm is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago under the number 1964.204. It corresponds to Wildenstein 1012.

Look at the work

A monumental cliff, a curved shoreline and calm sea are tightened into an experimental almost square format

The Upstream cliff is cut by the right edge and descends towards a brightly lit chalk gate. Its volume is constructed by cold blues in the shadows and thick yellows, pinks and whites in sun-stricken areas. The summit chapel disappears from the framing, which visually lengthens the beach line.

The shore forms a clear arc from the base of the cliff to the lower right corner. Tiny boats, several red sails and a group of stranded boats liven up this route. On the left, the turquoise sea opens wide; an isolated orange sail responds to chalk roses and pale clouds.

The Art Institute study shows that this apparent spontaneity is constructed: some boats were reserved from the beginning, others added to an already painted beach, and two shapes were finally covered.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The Devil's Bell provides a high viewpoint

Topographic research places Monet on a promontory at the start of the path going up to the Aval cliff. This position shows both the curve of the beach and the face of the Amont cliff.

02

The non-standard format transforms the site

Almost square, the canvas leaves less room at the top but more at the beach and the sea. This experimental choice avoids the expected tourist panorama and brings the masses together.

03

Thickness and transparency alternate

The whites and yolks of the chalk are laid in impasto, while the blue-gray shadows remain thin and sometimes reveal the preparation. The light is born directly from this contrast of material.

Read this specific version

The single image is from the official Art Institute of Chicago file. Scanning is limited to 2,883 × 3,000 px, without artificial enlargement, then encoded as a real WebP.

Composition01

Maintain the exact curve of the shoreline

It leads from the lower corner towards the Porte d'Amont and connects the successive boats. A beach that is too straight would remove the momentum that unites the foreground to the cliff.

Color02

Preserve thickness contrast on chalk

Light passages must remain more charged than shadows. A uniform model would lose the glare effect and technical structure revealed by the museum.

Matter03

Keep the sails as separate accents

The small red and orange shapes balance the greens of the sea. They must remain precise in their position but very simple in their design to maintain the scale of the site.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Art Institute of Chicago documents Étretat: The Beach and the Falaise d'Amont, oil on canvas from 1885, 69.3 × 66.1 cm, inventory 1964.204 and catalog Wildenstein 1012.

Viewpoint01

The Devil's Bell promontory

A topographical reconstruction of Place Monet above the southwest end of the main beach. This slightly low position on the path allows you to see more of the shore.

Technique02

A largely wet on wet execution

The scientific review identifies a one-off coal preparatory design, reserves around some boats, late additions and preparation areas left visible.

Support03

An almost square canvas ordered out of standard format

The fabric bears the stamp of the merchant Vieille & Troisgros. Its armor shares a relationship with W1025 and W1095, a sign that these supports come from the same roller.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1012 version and the 1964.204 inventory
  • The illuminated Upstream Gate at the foot of the cliff
  • The curved beach punctuated with small boats
  • The red sail isolated on the turquoise sea

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The almost square format is suitable for a living room wall, a wide entrance or above a console. A pale blue, pinkish sand or warm gray wall and a thin light oak frame let the sea breathe while highlighting the cliff.
