Look at the work

A single plant becomes monumental in a very thin vertical format

The beige pot is placed in the center of the lower edge. The stem rises almost without deviating, but the leaves alternate from left to right and gradually widen the silhouette in the upper half.

The background combines several blues laid in short strips. A darker area on the left gives depth, while the gray-brown floor stabilizes the pot and detaches its light edge.

Flamboyant nettle in pot F281/JH1143 is a 42 × 22 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under the inventory s0185V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The red of the leaves and the blue of the background create a powerful contrast, tempered by the yellow-green borders and earthy tones of the pot.

01

The format accompanies vertical growth

The canvas is almost twice as tall as it is wide. This tightened proportion amplifies the slenderness of the stem.

02

Each sheet has a double outline

A red-brown heart is surrounded by a yellow or green border. The wavy contours make the plant come alive without multiplying the details.

03

The blue varies behind the plant

Blue gray, turquoise and dark blue are juxtaposed in small areas. The background remains active but does not compete with the leaves.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Van Gogh Museum notice documents the format of 42 × 22 cm, the inventory s0185V1962 and the references F281/JH1143.

Botany

A flaming nettle, now called coleus

This ornamental plant is appreciated for its brightly colored leaves. Van Gogh uses the reds, greens and serrated borders.

Paris

A color study around a single subject

Rather than a large bouquet, the painter isolates a potted plant and observes the relationship between its warm foliage and the blue background.

Collection

A work from the Van Gogh collection

The painting is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0185V1962 and appears in catalogs as F281/JH1143.
