Grapes, still life F603Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two varieties of grapes overflow from a light basket on a yellow background. The red-purple and blue-black clusters form a dense mass in the center, while the pale green grains spread out in front of them like a second light.

Look at the work

Two kinds of grapes become an experience of complementary colors

The basket is placed diagonally and almost disappears under the fruit. The dark clusters advance to the left and bottom; behind them, a few green grains and a dry stem rebalance the composition.

Van Gogh surrounds each grain with short touches rather than a smooth pattern. Blue versus yellow, green versus red, and purple versus ocher make the volumes vibrate on a table that seems to blend in with the background.

Grapes is an oil on canvas of 33 × 46.3 cm painted in Paris in September - October 1887. Still life F603/JH1336 is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0194V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This still life is a chromatic laboratory. Van Gogh chooses two types of grapes and places them in a yellow environment in order to directly study the effects produced by the opposite colors.

01

The blue of the dark clusters gains intensity over the yellow

The blue-black fruits occupy the heart of the canvas, surrounded by golden ocher. The added contrast makes them deeper without the need for a uniform black shadow.

02

The light green strengthens in the vicinity of the red grapes

The grains in the foreground appear almost luminous because they touch the purple clusters. Fine brown lines maintain their design in the middle of the nearby colors.

03

Brushstrokes unify fruits, basket and table

The same short hatching passes through the yellow bottom, the grains and the container. The objects remain identifiable, but the entire surface participates in a single pulsation of material.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F603/JH1336, inventory s0194V1962 and 33 × 46.3 cm format identify this study of two grape varieties from the Van Gogh Museum.

Contrasts

Van Gogh tests blue against yellow and green against red

The museum notice presents the painting as a study of the strongest combinations. The fruits are used to directly compare two pairs of complementary colors.

Method

He prepared his pairings with balls of wool

Before using his expensive paint, Van Gogh brought together threads of different shades to judge their effects. This test method was used for the composition of Grapes.

Object

The samples were kept in a red lacquered box

The Van Gogh Museum mentions an elegant box where he stored his little balls. This handy tool shows how much his color choices could be prepared before working on canvas.

  • The large blue-black cluster in the center
  • Red grapes stretched to the left
  • The pale green grains scattered in the foreground
  • The white edge of the basket under the fruit
  • The yellow and ocher touches that cover the entire table
