Look at the work

Clear flowers emerge in foci from an almost nocturnal background

Two large white carnations dominate the top of the bouquet. Lower down, a red flower and several pink corollas form a diagonal descending to the lower right edge.

The dark vase has a rounded belly covered with irregular white lines. Its low visibility focuses attention on green stems and petal contrasts.

Vase with white and red carnations F236/JH1130 is an oil on canvas of 58 × 45.5 cm painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The work belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition combines a dark background inherited from Nuenen with more bold flower colors, sought after during the first Parisian year.

01

White is never uniform

Grey, pale green and cream mingle in the petals. The flowers remain bright without becoming flat spots.

02

Red is distributed at several heights

A central eyelet, top buttons, and reflections on the table create reminders that stabilize asymmetry.

03

The vase holds the bouquet by its outline

Its black belly and clear patterns give a heavy base to thin stems and scattered corollas.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F236/JH1130, the format of 58 × 45.5 cm and the dating of the summer of 1886 identify this Parisian bouquet in a private collection.

Paris

Bouquets serve as color studies

Van Gogh painted many flowers in 1886 to emerge from the grays and lands of his Dutch period.

Variety

Carnations at several stages

The bouquet brings together large open corollas, leaning flowers and several buds, which multiplies the shapes around the vase.

Catalog

F236/JH1130 is a precise composition

These numbers distinguish it from other carnation vases from 1886, notably F243, F245, F259 and F327.

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the two upper white carnations, the central red flower, the buttons, the decorated black vase and the colorful reflections of the table.

  • The two large white corollas
  • The red carnation placed in the center right
  • Red buttons near the top edge
  • The light lines on the black vase
  • The little red touches in the foreground
