À propos de l’œuvre
Vase avec œillets et zinnias, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris
Vase with eyelets and zinnias, F259Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A very airy bouquet of carnations and zinnias stands out against an almost black background. The white, yellow and red-brown flowers spread around a narrow vase, leaving large areas of shade between the stems.
Look at the work
The isolated flowers seem to emerge one by one from the dark depth
The bouquet is not compact: a large light flower dominates on the right, another floats on the left and several yellow corollas describe a downward curve towards the vase.
The green stems are barely visible. Van Gogh makes them appear in short highlights around the flowers; the vase only receives a beige light on its right side and blends into the dark table.
Vase with eyelets and zinnias F259/JH1132 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 61 × 50.2 cm, painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The work belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This still life is based on very concentrated contrasts. The light flowers do not fill the field: they punctuate the black and force the eye to reconstruct the stems, the volume of the vase and the depth.
The bouquet follows a descending diagonal
The tallest flower is on the right, then the yellow and red corollas gradually lead to the left and towards the vase.
Each flower receives a different material
Light carnations are formed by thick, tight touches; red and yellow zinnias use shorter, radiant strokes.
Vase is only lit on one side
A beige area outlines its belly and foot on the right. The rest disappears into the black green, which keeps the attention on the flowers.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F259/JH1132 and the format of 61 × 50.2 cm identify this bouquet in a special collection, distinct from the numerous carnation vases painted by Van Gogh in Paris.
Flowers allow you to quickly explore color
In Paris, Van Gogh multiplies the bouquets to try clearer oppositions and vary the touch depending on the species.
Canvas is now mounted on panel
This assembly stabilizes the original support. It is part of the hardware information that distinguishes F259 from neighboring bouquets.
The dark background further extends the Dutch period
The yellows and whites, however, are gaining in brilliance: they announce the expansion of the palette during the Parisian months.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the black green background, the large white flower high up, the yellow carnations, the red-brown zinnias, the thin stems and the illuminated vase on its right.
- The large light corolla placed at the top right
- The small pink flower isolated at the top left
- The yellow flowers that cross the center
- The red-brown group at the heart of the bouquet
- The beige reflection on the belly of the vase
