Oleanders, F593Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A bouquet of oleanders blooms in a pitcher of majolica in front of a green wall; at the edge of the table, the novel La Joie de vivre by Émile Zola gives this still life an intimate significance.

Look at the work

Inexhaustible flowers in the face of the Joy of Living

The dark blue pitcher stands in the center, its base surrounded by a light band. The long green leaves radiate in all directions and bear pink, white and salmon clusters that almost reach the upper edge.

The green background is constructed by visible rectangular touches. On the lilac and gray table, the yellow book occupies the left corner; its title and Zola's name are drawn in brown letters.

For Van Gogh, oleander was a vigorous plant, always ready to produce new shoots. The Metropolitan Museum combines this symbol of vitality with the highly visible choice of the novel The Joy of Living.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Met notice gives August 1888, 60.3 × 73.7 cm and the inventory 62.24; references F593/JH1566 identify this large horizontal composition.

01

A bouquet that overflows

The leaves cut the frame and the flowers are distributed without symmetry. The bouquet still appears to be growing rather than carefully arranged.

02

The book as a counterweight

The yellow mass of The Joy of Living balances the dark vase and transforms the title of the novel into a visual element.

03

Vibrant complements

The warm roses of the flowers reinforce the green of the wall, while the blue of the vase responds to the mauves of the table.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Van Gogh uses this same pitcher in majolica in several still lifes created in Arles.

Book

Émile Zola in the foreground

The Joy of Living, published in 1884, is placed closed but its title remains readable and directly contributes to the meaning of the work.

Distinction

F593, horizontal format

This Met canvas should not be confused with the vertical bouquet F594, which is currently not localized.

Collection

Number 62.24

The painting entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1962 by donation from Mr. and Mrs. John L. Loeb.

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the thickness of the wall keys, the flexibility of the sheets and the readability of the book without hardening the flowers.

  • Bunches of pale pink flowers
  • The long dark green leaves
  • The pitcher in blue majolica
  • The Joy of Living in the Left Corner
  • The green touches of the background
