Look at the work

A lying animal treated like a portrait

The white and gray head is placed near the center, framed by two black ears. The frontal gaze and the half-open mouth give the cow a surprisingly direct presence.

The legs are folded under the chest and on the right side. The meadow is not described as a landscape: greens, mallows and earth fill the entire surface around the animal.

Reclining Cow F1b/JH388 is a 30 × 50 cm oil on canvas painted in The Hague in August 1883. This version is kept in private collections in South Korea.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The very horizontal format follows the animal's body exactly. Van Gogh contrasts a large black mass with the clear impasto of the head and legs, creating immediate reading despite a reduced palette.

The body forms a long dark mass

The black-purple side occupies almost the entire width and stabilizes the composition. A few curved touches are enough to indicate the shoulder, back and hip.

The head concentrates the light material

Whites, grays, pinks and mauves intersect around the forehead and muzzle. These thick touches restore the bone structure and texture of the coat.

Pre replaces horizon

No sky appears. The grass becomes a continuous background whose dull greens and purple markings bring out the hooves and belly.

Precisely identify the original work

Two paintings of Reclining Cow are known. The 30 × 50 cm format and compact silhouette of this example correspond to F1b/JH388, and not the much narrower F1c/JH389 version.

The Great Lying Cow F1b

F1b measures 30 × 50 cm and is in Korean private collections. F1c measures only 19 × 47.5 cm and its current location remains unknown.

Dating

An oil from the Hague period

The catalogs date it from August 1883, shortly before Van Gogh's departure for Drenthe. He then further developed his mastery of oil painting.

Subject

An animal study without picturesqueness

The cow is isolated from any herd, building or horizon. The lying position allows the artist to focus on body weight and folded joints.
