A pale path leaves the foreground and turns between two masses of trees towards a horizon bathed in light. On the right, a tiny rider advances under the branches; on the left, two figures animate the embankment. In 1864, Monet painted an outdoor study in front of the Saint-Siméon farm where the extent of the sky counts as much as the rural motif.

Look at the work

The clear path opens a gap between the trees to the Norman sky

The road starts wide at the lower edge then narrows following a slight curve. Blue, gray and ocher ruts indicate the relief. The trees on the left rise in compact mass; those on the right form a more transparent screen under which the rider stands out.

The sky occupies almost half of the canvas. Large cream, gray, blue and mauve clouds reveal beaches of deeper blue. Near the horizon, a very pale yellow light separates the road from the distance and gives the landscape its breathing space.

The road is not a simple countryside motif: its curve organizes the entire depth and leads the eye towards the central clearing.

Trees frame the road like an irregular door. Their difference in density avoids symmetry and allows light to filter further to the right.

The rider and the two walkers are reduced to a few accents. They are enough to establish the scale of the road and suggest a move without transforming the canvas into a genre scene.

The sky carries atmospheric variation

Clouds are constructed by wide colored passages rather than contours. Their light is found on the path, creating continuity between the top and bottom of the composition.

The curve of the road must remain very readable

Light ochres dominate in the foreground, then cool and diminish toward the horizon. This progression constructs the distance without a rigid contour line.

Color02

Trees combine green, brown and blue

Vegetation is not uniformly dark. Warmer touches appear on the left, while bluish grays of the sky pass through the branches on the right.

Matter03

Clouds have soft edges but real structure

Bright creams, mauves and blue grays overlap in large masses. Melting them too much would remove the feeling of changing weather above the estuary.

Dated 1864, this oil on canvas measures 59 × 80 cm. It is listed as Wildenstein 24 and kept in the collection of the Banca d'Italia in Rome.

The inn welcomes many painters attracted by the estuary, coasts and Norman light. Monet worked there alongside artists such as Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind.

Monet himself cites the road among his studies

In a letter to Frédéric Bazille dated October 14, 1864, Monet mentions the construction of small ships and the road in front of the farm as two of his best studies of the moment.

The green landscape W24

This 1864 painting should not be confused with the later winter views of the Saint-Siméon road. Here, the dense vegetation and clear path describe a mild season.
