Sasso Valley, sun effect W862hand painted reproduction

In the Sasso Valley, palm trees and vegetation rise around a light building, while blue slopes open to the left. This oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm, painted during the Ligurian stay of 1884, is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum in Paris and corresponds to Wildenstein 862.

Look at the work

The sun crosses an almost entirely vegetal valley

The composition contrasts a light blue opening on the left with a dense mass of palm fronds, trunks and bushes on the right. A building with warm walls emerges between the trees; its geometric lines provide a stable reference point in the middle of the plant touches.

Greens mingle with yellows, blues and purples, while the construction receives colored pinks, ochres and whites. Monet does not describe each species: he translates the way in which southern light cuts out certain leaves and plunges others into cold shadow.

In W862, the sun effect does not come from a bright sky but from the contrast between the blue valley, the dark palm trees and the warmed facades.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A valley open on one side only

The left lets the landscape breathe and shows the staggering of the slopes. The right, denser and more vertical, concentrates architecture and trees. This asymmetry gives the scene its tension.

02

Architecture as a measure of vegetation

The building is not the main subject, but its straight walls allow you to perceive the curvature of the palm fronds and the abundance of foliage. The warm tones of the facade also amplify the surrounding greens.

03

The Marmottan Monet museum version

The format of 65 × 81 cm, the dating of 1884 and the reference Wildenstein 862 identify the Sasso Valley, a sun effect preserved in Paris.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one reference image is used. The photograph of the work was cropped on the canvas then converted into a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,404 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Depth in colorful shots

The distant slopes are bluer and less contrasting than the nearby vegetation. Respecting this progressive cooling allows the valley to open despite the density of the foreground.

Color02

Greens warmed by ochres and roses

Mediterranean light does not translate to yellow alone. The facades and foliage contain roses, earths and purples which give the greens their intensity.

Matter03

Keys oriented according to shapes

The palm fronds call for long, radiant lines, the bushes for short touches, the walls for more flat passages. This variety of gesture makes each material readable without a strong outline.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Marmottan Monet museum preserves Sasso Valley, sun effect, oil on canvas from 1884, 65 × 81 cm, listed under the number Wildenstein 862.

Location01

Sasso, above Bordighera

The village and its valley are located in the Ligurian hinterland. Monet thus occasionally leaves the coast to observe reliefs, gardens and more deep Mediterranean vegetation.

Campaign02

The stay on the Riviera in 1884

Monet arrived with Auguste Renoir then continued his work alone for almost three months. He seeks to translate a light and plants very different from Norman landscapes.

Collection03

Marmottan Monet Museum

The painting is kept in Paris in the museum which brings together a major collection of works by Monet, notably thanks to the legacy of his son Michel.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the Marmottan Museum, Wildenstein 862
  • The blue opening of the valley on the left
  • The palm trees and the light building grouped on the right
  • The contrast between cold shadows and facades heated by the sun

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This canvas brings plant warmth to a living room, dining room or office. A light stone wall, walnut and gray blue or terracotta textiles extend the light of the Riviera without overloading the composition.
