Claude Monet · A walk along the banks of the Seine in 1878 · Nasjonalmuseet Oslo

Spring on the island of Grande Jatte W459hand painted reproduction

A path runs along the Seine under the young leaves of spring. Walkers are distributed between the trees, the benches and the water's edge; boats pass in front of the bank of Levallois. In the distance, the Asnières railway bridge and the chimneys of the Clichy factories introduce the modern city into this luminous promenade.

Look at the work

Parisian spring brings together promenade, Seine and industry

The bank begins very close to the viewer in light greens, then narrows under a succession of trunks. Standing figures, seated figures and small touches of colorful clothing mark this movement towards the distance. The young leaves still let in a lot of sky and give the undergrowth a particular transparency.

On the right, the Seine reflects silvery blues and grays. Several boats slide parallel to the bank. Behind them, the buildings of Levallois, the bridge to Asnières and the tall chimneys of the Clichy gas factories blend into the atmosphere; dark smoke joins the white clouds.

The island appears green and peaceful, but the bridge, chimneys and smoke remind us that modern Paris is very close.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A walk led by the trunks

The verticals of the trees tighten with distance and create a regular depth. The path follows this perspective without a hard line.

02

Nature crossed by the city

Houses, railway bridges and chimneys remain small, but their presence is decisive. Monet does not oppose them to the landscape; he mixes them with the light.

03

Figures as colorful touches

Walkers are not individualized. Blues, reds and blacks punctuate the greens and make Sunday attendance on the island sensitive.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the NG.M.01290 inventory of the Nasjonalmuseet. The open file of 4000 × 3232 px was reduced to 3000 × 2424 px, without enlargement, then converted to WebP.

Composition01

An oblique bank that opens up space

The path and water line start from the lower left corner then converge towards the center, while the Seine widens to the right.

Color02

Fresh greens under a silvery sky

Yellow greens, soft blues and mauves give the spring tone. Clothes and smoke bring some more intense accents.

Matter03

A different touch depending on the plans

Nearby grasses are made of short gestures, trees of vertical lines and the distant city of small touches that dissolve in the air.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Nasjonalmuseet keeps this oil on canvas under the inventory NG.M.01290; it corresponds to number 459 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Location01

La Grande Jatte northwest of Paris

Monet set up his easel on this island in the Seine in the spring of 1878. The museum identifies the bank of Levallois, the bridge to Asnières and the factories of Clichy in the distance.

Together02

Three versions close to the pattern

The official notice specifies that Monet paints three similar views. However, they differ in atmosphere, light and arrangement of elements.

Acquisition03

Chosen in Paris in 1919

Director Jens Thiis selected the painting from the merchant Paul Rosenberg. It was acquired in 1919 thanks to funds from the Friends of the National Gallery.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the reduction of trunks and figures along the walk.
  • Preserve the light greens and transparency of young foliage.
  • Keep the bridge and chimneys visible without bringing them visually closer together.
  • Mingle dark smoke with clouds without creating artificial separation.
