The stability of the church faces the vertical movement of the cliff

The small architecture occupies a narrow strip at the top, while the wall descends almost the entire height. The very low viewpoint, obtained from the rocks accessible at low tide, makes the relief monumental.

Frank colors highlight the irregularities of the chalk: yellow, pink and green in the light, blue and purple in the hollows. The clear sky and its soft clouds isolate the more geometric shapes of the church.

The building appears solid not because it is large, but because its regular volumes resist the colorful cliff which seems to transform under the light.

Monet worked from February to April then from June to October and produced nearly a hundred paintings on the coast, sometimes up to eight paintings in the same day.
