Vase avec fleurs et chardons, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Vase with flowers and thistlesReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A terracotta vase bears a bouquet almost entirely composed of blue thistles, cut leaves and dry stems. On a sea green background, Van Gogh contrasts the harshness of the plant with the simple roundness of the container.
Look at the work
Thorny thistles in a very simple vase
The red-brown vase sits in the center of a light table and fills almost the entire lower half. Its concentric rings, painted brown, red and black, give weight to the pottery.
Above, the blue-green leaves form an irregular crown around two purple flower heads. Long light and black stems cross the bouquet diagonally. The turquoise background, placed in visible lines, envelops the whole in fresh light.
The composition brings three materials into dialogue: heavy pottery, sharp leaves and the light background covered by the brush.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Work 016-0020 can be recognized by its small vertical format, its red-brown globular vase, its two purple thistles and its almost monochrome turquoise background.
A very stable circular base
The repeated curves of the vase form a compact base. They compensate for unstable stems and leaves that disperse in all directions.
Black as a drawing
Van Gogh uses blue-black outlines to separate the leaves, flowers and edge of the vase. This dark design remains visible among the impasto.
A background that remains material
Turquoise is never smooth. Vertical and horizontal lines show the progression of the brush and keep the entire surface active.
