Yellow asters form the main luminous disks
Their petals radiate around browner centers. These circular shapes respond to each other at different heights and guide the gaze from the vase to the top.

Comprendre les formats
Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris
A very vertical bouquet brings together large yellow asters, pink and red flowers, smaller clusters and long leaves. The light ceramic vase, decorated with blue patterns, stands out on a brown table in front of an almost black background.
Look at the work
The flowers stack on several levels rather than opening wide. Two large yellow corollas occupy the top and center; lower down, a cream rose and salmon flowers surround the neck of the vase.
The stems and leaves extend to the right but remain contained in the 34.2 cm wide format. The round vase serves as a light base and its blue decoration introduces a precise pattern beneath the plant profusion.
Vase with asters, sage and other flowers F286/JH1127 is a 70.3 × 34.2 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. It is kept at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag under object number 0331645.
Composition, touch and color
Van Gogh concentrates the color in the center of the dark background. Flowers are differentiated not only by their hue, but also by the direction and density of brushstrokes.
Their petals radiate around browner centers. These circular shapes respond to each other at different heights and guide the gaze from the vase to the top.
A tall, thin branch rises to the left of the large flowers, while the leaves overflow further to the right. The bouquet thus avoids too rigid decorative symmetry.
Its cream belly receives small blue and brown patterns. This cold detail balances the yellows and reds while forming a clean base at the bottom of the composition.
Documented benchmarks
F286/JH1127, the format of 70.3 × 34.2 cm and the number 0331645 identify the vertical bouquet of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
Van Gogh then multiplies the bouquets in order to broaden a palette still marked by dark tones. Here, yellow, pink and red are isolated against a deep background.
This proportion requires an ascending construction. The flowers are distributed as stages rather than gathered in a single crown.
Its former inventory number SCH-1920-0002 and references F286/JH1127 complete the documentary identification of the canvas.
