A bouquet of pink and white mauves overflows from a green vase placed at the edge of a light table. The flowers disperse in front of an indeterminate background, blue, yellow and cream, where the shapes seem to dissolve. Monet began this great still life in 1881, kept it for around forty years in his workshop then took it back before signing and selling it around 1920. The oil on canvas measures 100.4 × 81.8 cm; it is kept at the Courtauld Gallery under the number P.1932.SC.275 and corresponds to Wildenstein 626.

Look at the work

An unstable bouquet that seems to advance towards the viewer

The vase is offset to the right and seen from a slightly elevated point. The longest stem goes to the left, while the flowers in the center fan-shaped. This asymmetry avoids the frontal presentation of a traditional still life.

Purples are not defined by continuous contours. White, pink, lilac, green and blue are placed in thick touches and superimposed. The table and background receive the same light colors, so that bouquet, container and space respond to each other.

The difficulty of the painting becomes its strength: the flowers, the vase and the table seem both solidly painted and on the verge of blending into the light.
