Vase avec œillets et autres fleurs, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris

Vase with carnations and other flowers, F596Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

An almost black blue vase bears a layered bouquet: small white flowers in the upper part, pink mass in the center and red carnations falling on each side. The blue background punctuated with patterns transforms floral study into an exercise in color.

Look at the work

The bouquet rises, widens and then falls around a dark vase

The central stems lead towards a clear and light sheaf. Lower down, the white and pink flowers form a bearing, then the red carnations descend towards the edges and rebalance the verticality of the format.

The vase absorbs almost all the light, but a few blue reflections make its volume felt. Behind it, the stripes and patterns of the wallpaper reduce the depth and bring out the irregular silhouettes of the flowers.

Vase with carnations and other flowers F596/JH1135 is a 62.2 × 40.3 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The Kreeger Museum preserves it under the 1960.9 inventory.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This canvas belongs to the first floral campaign of the Parisian stay. Van Gogh uses the bouquet to confront red and green, pinkish white and blue, impasto of the petals and calmer flat areas of the background.

01

The red is concentrated around the middle

The carnations form a warm belt around the vase. Their visual weight stabilizes the upper white spray, thinner and more dispersed.

02

Blue background deliberately flattens the space

The vertical stripes and small colored marks read like surface decoration. This effect brings the composition closer to the aesthetics of Japanese prints studied in Paris.

03

Impasto gives body to corollas

The light petals are laid in thick, separate touches. Their relief contrasts with the compact silhouette of the vase and the smoother areas of the wallpaper.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Kreeger Museum's notice specifies the 1960.9 inventory, the format of 24 1/2 × 15 7/8 inches and membership in a series of approximately thirty-five Parisian floral still lifes.

Paris

The flowers are used to lighten the palette

In 1886, Theo wrote to their mother that Vincent mainly painted flowers in order to make his future paintings brighter in color.

Series

A campaign of about thirty-five bouquets

During his first Parisian summer, Van Gogh multiplied floral arrangements and regularly received flowers from his friends to study shapes and chromatic accords.

Japonism

Framing influenced by prints

The decorative background, the reduced depth and the clean cut of the bouquet announce Van Gogh's growing interest in Japanese prints available in Paris.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the height of the bouquet, the impasto of the petals, the drooping red carnations, the dark vase, the decorated blue background and the few flowers placed on the table.

  • The white wreath that finishes the bouquet
  • The pale pink mass in the center left
  • The red carnations distributed on each side
  • The blue-black vase with limited reflections
  • The colorful bands and patterns of the blue background
