Poppy vase W848hand painted reproduction

A bouquet of red, pink and white poppies springs from a narrow vase placed on a table, in front of a light background animated by foliage and colorful shadows. Painted in 1883, this oil on vertical canvas of 98 × 60 cm is kept at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen under the number VdV 51 and corresponds to Wildenstein 848.

Look at the work

The flowers overflow from the vase and transform the background into light

The vase stands low in the composition, almost at the edge of the table. Long stems rise, cross and spread to the upper limits. Poppies do not form a compact bouquet: their isolated corollas open intervals where the bottom remains visible.

The most saturated reds are concentrated in the center and in the upper half. Whites, pinks, yellows and blues appear in the light petals, while the greens of the foliage change from olive to turquoise. The blue and gray vase stabilizes this colored dispersion.

In W848, Monet does not draw each petal: he lets a touch of red, white or pink bloom against the bottom until it becomes a flower.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An expanding vertical composition

The narrow vase serves as a starting point for a range of stems and corollas. The bouquet widens as it rises, which gives momentum to the very high format.

02

Intervals as important as flowers

The clear spaces between the stems prevent the plant mass from becoming opaque. They circulate light through the bouquet and maintain the depth of the background.

03

A still life treated like a landscape

The brief, juxtaposed keys capture light ratios rather than a botanical inventory. The flowers, vase and background contribute to the same vibrant atmosphere.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The sheet uses a single exact image of W848. The real WebP measures 1755 × 3000 px and replaces the old file of 334 × 572 px, without adding a second visual.

Composition01

Preserve bouquet irregularity

Flowers should not be distributed symmetrically. Some corollas group together, others isolate themselves near the edges; this asymmetry gives vitality to the whole.

Color02

Preserve several reds

Scarlet, carmine, salmon pink and red-brown coexist in poppies. A single flat shade would remove differences in light and depth between flowers.

Matter03

Let the background participate in the image

The beige, blue gray and green background is not a neutral surface. Its touches surround the stems and bring out the light petals without resorting to hard contours.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen documents Vase of poppies, oil on canvas from 1883, 98 × 60 cm, inventory VdV 51 and Wildenstein 848.

Gender01

A still life in the heart of the 1880s

Monet regularly paints bouquets and fruits alongside his landscapes. The museum emphasizes that these works offer colorful patterns that can be observed in a controlled environment.

Economy02

Still lifes sought after by collectors

The museum notice recalls that the account books of 1880 sometimes show higher prices for Monet's still lifes than for his landscapes.

Collection03

A long-term loan since 1972

The painting belongs to the Stichting Willem van der Vorm and is on long-term loan to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. It has the number VdV 51.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This vertical format is suitable for a narrow section of wall, an entrance, a dining room or near a library. A cream, sage green or blue-gray wall and a patinated gold frame make the poppies stand out without competing with their reds.
