Vase aux œillets, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris

Vase with eyelets, F245Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

White, pink, red and orange carnations bloom above a dark vase. Van Gogh makes them emerge from a black green background with thick material, short, radiant petals and a few green leaves which connect the bouquet to the table.

Look at the work

A Parisian bouquet built by masses of light

The two large white flowers form the luminous heart of the canvas. Around them, the salmon and red carnations are distributed in an irregular crown, while the smaller flowers are gradually lost in the background.

The cylindrical vase is not treated as a smooth object: its green, gray and black reflections are fragmented by the touch. On the table, fallen flowers and orange passages extend the bouquet into the foreground.

Vase with eyelets F245/JH1145 is an oil on canvas of 46 × 37.5 cm painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The original belongs to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam under number A 2235.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh uses this still life as a color laboratory. Light, warm hues are never isolated: they are enhanced by the dark green, colored black and cold accents of the vase.

01

The eyelets are painted with radiant touches

Each corolla consists of small lines that start from a darker center. The serrated edges remain irregular and give the flowers a very different vibration from a drawn outline.

02

The dark background absorbs part of the bouquet

The leaves and tall flowers appear then disappear in almost black greens. This continuity avoids the cutting effect and gives depth to the sheaf.

03

The vase and table stabilize the exuberance of the flowers

The vertical shape of the container holds the center of the composition. The horizontals of the table and the fallen flowers create a wide base under the upward thrust of the bouquet.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F245/JH1145, the number A 2235 and the format of 46 × 37.5 cm make it possible to distinguish this canvas from the numerous carnation vases painted by Van Gogh in Paris.

Paris

Flowers become a decisive exercise in color

In 1886, Van Gogh multiplied bouquets to clarify his palette and study chromatic oppositions. Here, whites, reds and oranges gain intensity against the black green background.

Carnations

The same species produces several key rhythms

Large white corollas are large and dense; red flowers fragment more; the small buds remain almost absorbed by the leaves.

Marker

A 2235 is the Stedelijk Museum number

The work is also listed F245 in the De la Faille catalog and JH1145 in that of Jan Hulsker.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the contrast between the luminous petals and the dark background, the variety of reds, the asymmetrical arrangement of the flowers and the visible material of the vase and the table.

  • The two large white corollas in the center
  • Orange and red carnations arranged without symmetry
  • Bright green leaves caught in the almost black background
  • The gray green reflections of the cylindrical vase
  • The fallen flowers and orange touches in the foreground
