À propos de l’œuvre
Bois de Boulogne avec des passants, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1886 · Paris, probably Parc Monceau
Walkers in a park in Paris, F224Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Walkers advance between dark trunks, red foliage and ocher yellow soil. Long presented as a view of the Bois de Boulogne, the scene is today brought closer to Parc Monceau by research from the Van Gogh Museum.
Look at the work
The branches form an autumnal vault above the walkers
Two large trees frame the composition and their branches meet in the upper part. Between them, a clear opening reveals a facade and leads the eye towards the more distant figures.
In the foreground, a woman in a dark dress and her companion form the main group. Smaller silhouettes are distributed along the path, while empty benches and low barriers structure the ground.
Walkers in a park in Paris F224/JH1112 is a 46.5 × 38 cm oil on canvas painted in the fall of 1886. Signed "Vincent" at the bottom right, it belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The range still combines deep browns from the Dutch period with more frank yellows, reds and greens. Thick touches follow the directions of branches, foliage and paths.
The vault of the trees constructs the framing
The thick branches extend on both sides and intersect above the central void. This device frames the light facade without resorting to a rigid architectural perspective.
Walkers are distributed by depth
The couple in the foreground is the densest; intermediate figures become smaller and isolated. Their succession is enough to move space back.
Autumn transforms Parisian color
Yellow ocher, Siena, olive green and red-brown are juxtaposed in visible touches. The scene remains dark, but the light from the ground and sky passes through it.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F224/JH1112 and its vertical format of 46.5 × 38 cm distinguish this work from F225/JH1110, horizontal view of the Bois de Boulogne covered in the previous sheet.
The place would rather be Parc Monceau
The Sotheby's notice reports the identification proposed by the Van Gogh Museum. The painting nevertheless retains its old titles linked to the Bois de Boulogne in several catalogs.
The work was presented at Sotheby's in 2019
Offered as lot 22 in New York, it had remained among the descendants of the Swiss collector Emil Hahnloser since the beginning of the 20th century.
"Vincent" appears at the bottom right
The signature is placed in the brown and red tones of the floor, close to the main group, without disrupting the balance of the foreground.
