La vieille tour du cimetière de Nuenen sous la neige, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · January 1885 · Nuenen
Old tower of the Nuenen cemetery under the snow, F87Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
The old tower of Nuenen stands alone in the middle of a snow-capped cemetery. Its black-brown mass, topped in white, contrasts with a mauve gray sky and an almost luminous ground where a few silhouettes, low walls and tombs indicate the scale of the place.
Look at the work
Dark ruin becomes the fixed point of a winter landscape
The tower occupies the center right and rises above a very low horizon. The village buildings have almost disappeared; only a few buildings and fences emerge in the snow.
A pink path leads from the foreground towards the base of the tower. The small figures distributed on the left and in the center discreetly animate this silent expanse without looking away from the monument.
The Old Tower of the Nuenen Cemetery in the Snow F87/JH600 is an oil on canvas mounted on cardboard measuring 30 × 41.5 cm, painted in January 1885. The original belongs to the Stavros Niarchos collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The contrast between the almost black tower and the colored whites of the snow structures the entire image. Van Gogh renounces architectural detail in favor of an instantly recognizable silhouette.
The tower reads like a large cut-out shape
The openings and half-timbered timbers are indicated by a few dark rectangles and obliques. The snow on the roof brings out the tip of the arrow.
Snow white contains several colors
Water green, pink, cream and blue gray run through the ground. These variations give depth without breaking the impression of cold.
The path creates the only true entry into the scene
Its pink traces start from the lower edge and tighten towards the tower. This soft diagonal counterbalances the verticality of the monument.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F87/JH600, dimensions of 30 × 41.5 cm and the Niarchos collection distinguish this winter version from other views of the Nuenen Tower.
Van Gogh returns several times to the old tower
He painted it under the snow then in a spring cemetery. The versions differ greatly in season, framing and condition of the monument.
The medieval tower was then a familiar ruin of the village
Detached from the disappeared church, it overlooked the cemetery near the presbytery where the Van Gogh family lived. Its silhouette linked daily landscape and local history.
The work is documented as canvas mounted on cardboard
The small format is suitable for direct study of the pattern. The proposed reproduction remains an oil painting made by hand on canvas.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the slightly off-center position of the tower, its snow-covered roof, the pink path, the small figures, the low walls and the green and mauve nuances of the white landscape.
- The light arrow that ends the dark tower
- Snow patches placed on roofs and walls
- The pink path that winds from the foreground
- The tiny silhouettes to the left of the monument
- The water greens and purple grays of the sky and the ground
