À propos de l’œuvre

Vernon, soleil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1894 · ex-Brooklyn 22.59 · W1386

Vernon, sun W1386hand painted reproduction

Vernon's collegiate church stands out under a still veiled sun, above a large surface of the blue-purple Seine. Unlike the fog-dominated versions, this canvas allows the roof, the walls of the bank and the masses of trees to be read better, while maintaining diffused light which connects the planes.

Look at the work

Vernon under a veiled sun, between the more readable architecture of the bank and the vast blue vibration of the Seine

The church occupies the left third and dominates a very low bank. The trees stretch to the right, accompanied by a light house close to the edge. The water takes up more than half of the painting and imposes a large, almost abstract area of blue, purple and gray.

The sky is clear but not bright. Very light yellows and roses warm the church, while the Seine remains dominated by cold blues. The small horizontal touches of the water become tighter in the foreground and give depth without drawn waves.

W1386 balances two readings: Vernon's concrete silhouette and a water surface already freed from detail, constructed almost entirely by color.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The first painting by Vernon's group from 1894

Wildenstein number 1386 opens the series of views devoted to Vernon that year. Monet retains the same general pattern, but varies the degree of mist, the intensity of the sun and the readability of the buildings.

02

A work long preserved at the Brooklyn Museum

The painting was acquired in 1922 with funds donated by Helen L. Babbott and Frank L. Babbott. The Brooklyn Museum sold it to Sotheby's in December 2020; its current conservation is therefore a private collection.

03

Water as the main color field

The Seine goes beyond the function of reflection. Its vast blue-purple expanse has its own rhythm of touches and occupies more space than the city. A faithful copy must maintain this amplitude without overloading the foreground.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single cropped reference image measures 768 × 535 px. It remains at its native definition and has been preserved as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Church off-center above very low horizon

The weight of the building on the left is compensated by the trees and the light house on the right. The large surface of water maintains the distance between the viewer and the bank.

Color02

Purple blue, pearl gray, muted green and pale yellow

The sun acts by warming rather than by sharp contrast. The yellows light up the church and some portions of the sky, while the blues unify the Seine and the remaining mist.

Matter03

Denser material in the foreground

The water touches are tighter and more visible near the bottom edge. They become lighter as they approach the shore, which builds distance.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These landmarks concern Vernon, Soleil, Wildenstein catalog 1386 and former Brooklyn Museum number 22.59.

Identification01

W1386, ex-Brooklyn 22.59

This oil on canvas from 1894 measures 65.7 × 92.7 cm. It is signed and dated 94 at the bottom left.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel acquired the work from Monet in May 1895. After its passage in the Henry L. Quick collection, it entered the Brooklyn Museum in 1922.

Sale03

Awarded in December 2020

Sotheby's sold the painting to the Brooklyn Museum collections on December 8, 2020. The location of the current owner is not made public.
