Water Lilies (Nymphéas, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A six-meter panorama painted at Giverny · Carnegie Museum of Art

The Water Lilies Basin W1983hand painted reproduction

Six meters wide, the Giverny pond fills the entire visual field. Islets of white, pink and yellow water lilies float among purple, green and dark blue reflections; neither bank nor horizon helps stabilize the space. Created in Monet's last years, this panoramic panel makes the surface of the water a world without edges.

Look at the work

Water becomes surface, depth and reflection at the same time

Water lilies are distributed in irregular layers, more numerous on the left and in the upper part. Their oval leaves give scale to the canvas, but do not define any stable foreground. Some are sharp and clear; others dissolve in greens and mauves.

Long vertical touches indicate reflected trees and plants, while horizontal passages suggest water ripples. These two directions intersect without traditional perspective. A large purple cloud appears to float in the center, while it belongs to the sky overturned in the pool.

In front of this panel, the eye no longer contemplates a garden from the bank: it enters an expanse where the sky, plants and water continually exchange places.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The absence of a horizon removes the fixed point of view

Monet frames only the pond mirror. The top is therefore not a sky and the bottom is not a ground: each area can be read as water, reflection or vegetation. This ambiguity causes the gaze to circulate across the entire width.

02

The panoramic format requires several foci

No central motif dominates the six meters. The light water lilies on the left, the green masses on the right and the purple ones in the middle create successive stages. The composition is discovered by moving in front of it.

03

Colors make depth appear

Opaque greens appear to float near the surface; more transparent blues and purples open up deep areas. Spot yellows and pinks prevent the whole thing from closing in a dark tone.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to the large Water Lilies (Water Lilies) panel, oil on canvas circa 1920 -1926, 200 × 600 cm, kept at the Carnegie Museum of Art and listed Wildenstein 1983. The unique WebP measures 3,000 × 965 px, reduction of the document exact photographic in high definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The ratio of three to one must be preserved

The 200 × 600 cm format unfolds the scene like an environment. A shorter crop would remove lateral breathing and progression from groups of water lilies.

Color02

The violets cross the entire surface

Lavender, mauve, blue and cold pink are not confined to shade. They connect reflected clouds, deep water and intervals between green leaves.

Matter03

The keys change direction

Long verticals for reflections, broken horizontal ones for water and rounded commas for leaves: variation of gesture is essential to make the pool without drawing its limits.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This monumental oil panel on canvas measures 200 × 600 cm. Painted around 1920 -1926, it is kept at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and corresponds to the 1983 issue of the Wildenstein catalog.

Giverny01

A pattern prepared for more than twenty years

Monet created his water garden from the 1890s, diverted an arm of the Epte and planted water lilies. He first painted views still bordered by the banks or the Japanese bridge, then gradually tightened the framing on the surface alone.

Scale02

Two meters high by six meters wide

The dimensions exceed those of an easel painting and engage the peripheral field. This scale brings the work closer to the large water lily decorations designed to envelop the viewer rather than offer them a distant window.

Last years03

A vision transformed by duration

Monet returns to large panels in the workshop, adds and covers layers, then compares their harmonies. The accumulated material reflects less of a single moment than a memory of lights observed in the pool.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Strictly respect the panoramic format of the composition.
  • Keep large purple passages without standardizing them.
  • Vary the direction and length of the reflection keys.
  • Divide the water lilies into irregular, breathable groups.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This panorama is suitable for a large living room, entrance or reception area with a clear wall. A very sober frame, dark bronze or natural wood lets the width breathe; a cream, pearl gray or deep green wall amplifies purples and water lilies.
