À propos de l’œuvre

Les Vessenots à Auvers, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · May 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Les Vessenots in AuversReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Green and yellow fields occupy almost the entire canvas, pushing the houses of the Vessenots towards a thin strip of horizon. The thick commas of the brush give the terrain continuous energy.

Look at the work

The fields bring the land closer together and the village further away

In the foreground, the furrows follow several yellow, green and blue diagonals. A sinuous blue-purple shape runs through the bottom of the composition, while the crops rise to the scattered houses.

White cottages, red roofs and trees are packed under a clear blue sky. On the right, a massive tree closes the view; in the distance, the hills are treated by long undulating bands.

The horizon placed very high transforms the field into a protagonist. The village seems close in color, but almost inaccessible behind the moving expanse of crops.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum preserves this painting under inventory 559 (1978.41). It is cataloged F797/JH2003 and is among the first painted views after Van Gogh's arrival in Auvers.

01

A compressed horizon

Houses, trees, hills and sky hold in the upper part. This framing leaves the field with an unusual depth and pushes the hamlet back despite the sharpness of its colors.

02

Writing periods and commas

Short brushstrokes, loaded with material, change direction with relief. Straight lines, loops and small commas describe each plant less than they convey the movement of the ground.

03

Doctor Gachet's house

The name Vessenots designates the sector of Auvers where Doctor Paul Gachet, first owner of the work, lived. The view thus associates Van Gogh's new landscape with his immediate surroundings.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must respect the high horizon, the very busy material of the fields, the small houses of distinct colors and the undulating rhythm which leads to the hills.

  • The yellow and green diagonals that structure cultures
  • The sinuous blue-purple shape of the foreground
  • White houses and red roofs on the horizon
  • The dark tree that closes the composition on the right
