À propos de l’œuvre

Grosse mer à Étretat, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · The cliff and the waves seen from the beach · Musée d'Orsay

Big seas in Étretat W127hand painted reproduction

A heavy, white sea breaks against Étretat beach, under a blue-gray sky almost as dense as water. On the left, the cliff and the Porte d'Amont form a dark mass; in the foreground, a small group of spectators watch the waves. Monet stretches the composition to an exceptionally wide format to contrast human fragility with the horizontal energy of the storm.

Look at the work

The width of the painting gives the waves all the power of a lived scene

The cliff occupies the upper left corner and descends sharply towards the sea. The natural door opens like a small dark breach at the foot of the rock. In front of it, several lines of foam follow one another and cross almost the entire canvas.

The figures in the foreground are grouped near the lower edge: their brown, black and red coats contrast with the clear beach. A tiny sail or boat appears offshore. Between these two human landmarks, the sea remains largely empty, dominated by waves.

The cliff anchors the eye, but the succession of bands of foam imposes the true rhythm of the composition.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Unusually wide panorama

The canvas measures almost twice as wide as it is tall. This ratio allows Monet to extend the waves and the sky, while the cliff and spectators concentrate at both ends of the diagonal.

02

Three horizontal bands under tension

The beach, sea and sky form the main levels. The lines of white foam cross the middle zone and give a continuous movement, thwarted by the steep vertical of the cliff.

03

A dark range lit by foam

Slate blue, gray green and black dominate the scene. The broken whites of the water and the small red touches of the characters provide the necessary contrasts without diminishing the feeling of bad weather.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The image corresponds to the RF 1678 inventory of the Musée d'Orsay and Wildenstein number 127. The high definition file was limited to 3,000 × 1,476 px then encoded in WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The waves advance through several ridges

Each strip of foam has a different thickness, curve and value. Repeating them mechanically would cause the controlled disorder of the big sea to be lost.

Color02

The cliff remains dark but structured

Gray, green and brown distinguish the rocky planes and the Upstream Gate. A single black mass would close the left corner and remove the relationship between rock, foam and sky.

Matter03

Spectator group gives scale

The silhouettes are small but clearly colored. Their tight arrangement makes the size of the waves perceptible and places human observation at the heart of the natural pattern.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Made between 1868 and 1869, this oil on canvas measuring 66.2 × 130.5 cm is signed Claude Monet at the bottom left. It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the inventory RF 1678 and classified Wildenstein 127.

Etretat01

The Gateway Under rough seas

The silhouette of the cliff allows us to precisely identify Étretat beach. Monet will often return to this Normandy coast, but this work belongs to his very early research from the late 1860s.

Provenance02

From Durand-Ruel to Étienne Moreau-Nélaton

The provenance published by Orsay mentions the Marsigny collection, then Durand-Ruel and Denys Cochin. Étienne Moreau-Nélaton acquired the painting in 1900 before giving it to the State in 1906.

Collection03

Moreau-Nélaton donation of 1906

After the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume gallery, the work was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986. It bears the national inventory RF 1678.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the very large panoramic format.
  • Vary the ridges and tones of the foam.
  • Keep the cliff dark without blocking your plans.
  • Keep small but colorful spectators in the foreground.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This panoramic navy is suitable for a large living room wall, dining room or office. A weathered black, slate gray or driftwood frame accompanies the power of the sky and cliff, while a side light reveals the long touches of foam.
