Vétheuil, par Claude Monet

Vétheuil on the Seinehand painted reproduction

Vétheuil stretches on the opposite bank of the Seine under a green and orange hill. The church dominates the village, while the houses, trees and their reflections respond to each other in a very soft pink, blue and sea green light.

Look at the work

The village splits into a clear Seine where reflections become architecture

The bank line crosses the canvas a little above the middle. On the left, the church and its tower emerge above a group of red, cream and blue houses. Monet closes almost no outline: the facades are built in small warm verticals in front of the large green slope.

The Seine occupies almost half of the composition. The reflections of the buildings descend in green-gray, pink and ocher bands, then dissolve in a wide periwinkle blue passage. The signature at the bottom right remains the only clearly traced element in this flexible surface.

The landscape is not divided between village and reflection: the bank acts as a hinge around which the same colors only change direction.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Vétheuil on the Seine - Claude Monet
01

A church that gives scale to the village

The tower must remain dominant without being isolated by a dark design. Its ochres, pinks and grays blend into the hill while maintaining a precise vertical.

02

A very thin bank between two worlds

The green line of the bank organizes the entire composition. Too thick, it would cut the canvas; too faded, it would cause the relationship between the houses and their reflections to lose.

03

Reflections longer than their patterns

In the water, colors are stretched vertically and interrupted by blue horizontal passages. This crossing gives the Seine its calm and depth.

Details and visual documents

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The church, the houses and the colorful hillThe detail shows the small pink, red and cream verticals that make up the facades. Behind them, the slope mixes emerald green, orange and mauve without uniform flatness.

The Seine in periwinkle blue and pale pinkThe green-gray reflections descend from the shore, then interrupt with large blue touches. Roses and ochres warm the water without producing an exact mirror.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Inventory G 0238, Wildenstein 1641 catalog

The Von der Heydt Museum dates this oil on canvas to 1900 -1902. It measures 81 × 92 cm and bears the signature "Claude Monet" at the bottom right.

Acquisition02

A Monet who entered the museum in 1910

Bernheim-Jeune sold the painting in 1910 to Julius Schmits, collector of Elberfeld. The same year he offered it to the municipal museum, which became the Von der Heydt Museum.

Vétheuil03

A motif taken up after the stay of the years 1878 -1881

Monet returns to the village in several turn-of-the-century compositions. Here, the frontal viewpoint places the church, the hill and the long sheet of reflections in an almost symmetrical balance.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Version G 0238 and its signature at the bottom right
  • The dominant church tower but without hard outline
  • The bank kept thin and horizontal
  • Vertical reflections interrupted by the blue of the water
