Claude Monet · Vétheuil · 1880 · W594
A golden and red field rises towards the houses of Vétheuil, almost absorbed by the trees and hillsides. On the right, a large poplar stands against a sky covered with rapid clouds; in the foreground, the poppies form bright touches rather than a regular border. Painted in 1880, this 59.7 × 80 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum under number 2403 and corresponds to Wildenstein 594.

Look at the work
The terrain is organized in oblique bands: dark poppies at the lower edge, orange and gold cereals in the center, then greenery and dwellings near the horizon. These strata lead the gaze towards the village while giving the foreground a strong material presence.
Trees do not form a continuous screen. The large straight poplar tree, the two thin trunks in the center and the bouquets below reveal fragments of houses, a white roof and the curves of the hills. The sky thus maintains an open movement above the vegetation.
Monet captures Vétheuil without detailing its architecture: a few clear walls are enough, because the real event is the passage of the wind in the field, the trees and the clouds.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Touches of poppies mingle with cereals without a precise floral design. Their irregular rhythm gives a feeling of depth and moving vegetation.
The main tree is on the right, while the left half remains lower and more open. This difference gives the sky a changing magnitude and avoids any fixed balance.
White, brown and blue facades appear between the foliage. This treatment maintains the unity of the landscape and prevents the architecture from competing with the field.
Reference image
The single image is a high definition photograph of the original preserved at Kelvingrove; it is limited to 3,000 × 2,239 px then encoded in real WebP, without oversampling.
The first red plan, the golden band and the green area of the village must remain distinct. Merging them would flatten the upward movement of W594.
Its dark silhouette is the main vertical. It must remain solid while allowing the green, blue and brown touches that animate its foliage to be read.
The clouds are made of visible lines, sometimes blue, gray or pink. A sky that is too smooth would eliminate the feeling of wind noted by the museum instructions.
Documented benchmarks
Glasgow Museums preserves Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1880, 59.7 × 80 cm, inventory 2403 and catalog Wildenstein 594.
The Glasgow documentation highlights the use of small, hasty touches directly on the canvas to capture the running clouds and the movement of the wind in the trees.
The village of the Seine then becomes a laboratory where the artist studies fields, hillsides, seasons and reflections under very diverse light conditions.
The painting joined the municipal collections of Glasgow thanks to collector William McInnes and today bears the inventory number 2403.
