Vétheuil rises in an orange-pink light, then repeats itself in the Seine in the form of long vertical trails. The almost square format divides the canvas between the village and its reflection, without a hard line: the church, the houses, the bank and the water come together with slight changes in color.

Look at the work

The village and its reflection occupy two halves which respond to each other without repeating themselves

The church dominates the left bank of the center with its red-brown bell tower. Neighboring houses are built in small cream, mauve and orange masses. Behind them, the hills fade into a purple-pink sky where no shape retains a clean edge.

The lower half extends the same colors, but the touches become more vertical. The reflections of the bell tower and houses stretch downward, then break into blue, yellow and lilac passages. This difference in direction is enough to distinguish the water from the landscape.

Monet does not copy the village in the Seine: he transforms its architecture into a second luminous material, longer, calmer and more uncertain.

An almost symmetrical balance

The bank crosses the canvas near the middle, but the reflections are never an exact duplication. Their length and blur give the square format its depth.

The bell tower as the main landmark

The vertical of the bell tower organizes the village and its reflection. It must remain readable without becoming dark or drawn, because the entire scene belongs to the same light at the end of the day.

A warm range crossed by blues

Roses, oranges and yellows dominate, but mauves and blues cool the Seine. This alternation avoids uniformly sepia or too saturated reproduction.

This oil on canvas from 1901 measures 90 × 93 cm. It is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago under number 1933.1161 and corresponds to number 1645 of the catalog raisonné.

1901 series02

Fifteen painted views from Lavacourt

Monet rented a house in Lavacourt, opposite Vétheuil, and painted a series of fifteen views from his balcony. The museum preserves two states of the motif, including this one associated with the setting sun.

Historical title03

Vétheuil at sunset from 1905

The Durand-Ruel archives recorded the painting in December 1905 under the title Vétheuil au soleil couchant. This name then accompanies several exhibitions organized during Monet's lifetime.
