Vétheuil, in the morninghand painted reproduction

Vétheuil appears behind a large screen of lilac blue Seine. The church dominates a barely awake village, while the hill, the roofs and their reflections blend into a very soft gray, pink and yellow light.

Look at the work

A veiled morning where the village seems to be born from light

The bank shares the canvas near the middle. The church and its tower form the only frankly vertical axis; neighboring houses are reduced to small cream, pink and mauve masses. The hill behind them remains diffuse and almost absorbs the outline of the buildings.

The water occupies the entire lower half. Long horizontal touches of blue and gray are interrupted by vertical reflections of yellow or purple. This opposition of directions gives the river its calm without producing a descriptive mirror.

The pattern remains recognizable, but the morning light reduces each shape to a relationship of tone, direction and transparency.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Vétheuil, in the morning - Claude Monet
01

The church as an anchor

The tower must remain precise without being surrounded by brown. Its cold yellows and mauves integrate it into the atmospheric veil.

02

A hill with no hard skyline

The sky and the slope meet in transitions of gray, blue and purple. A separation that is too clear would break the impression of mist.

03

Vertical reflections on horizontal water

The strips of the Seine are crossed by a few colorful descents. This crossing of gestures must remain visible in the reproduction.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The church and the houses in the mistThe detail shows the pale yellows, pinks and mauves placed without a closed drawing. The tower remains readable thanks to its vertical and not a dark outline.

Morning reflections on the SeineThe horizontal blues are crossed by small yellow and purple descents which extend the village into the water without duplicating it exactly.

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Inventory P 1733, Wildenstein catalog 1646

Provenance03

From Monet to the Maurice Masson legacy

The painting passed through Boussod, Valadon et Cie in 1902, then belonged to Maurice Masson. It entered the Lille collections through its legacy in 1949.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version P 1733, Wildenstein 1646
  • The signature and date at the bottom left
  • The mist maintained by gentle transitions
  • Vertical reflections preserved on the horizontal frame of the water
