Two children descend the central staircase of the Vétheuil garden, framed by sunflowers almost as tall as them and by two large blue and white pots in the foreground. The house closes the top of the composition under an intense blue sky. Signed and dated Claude Monet 81, this oil on canvas measuring 100.5 × 82 cm was painted during the summer of 1881, belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 684.

Two children in the bright path of the Vétheuil garden

The path starts at the lower edge then goes straight towards the house. The two children, Jean-Pierre Hoschedé and Michel Monet, appear in the middle of the stairs; their small scale makes sunflowers and flowerbeds even more exuberant.

Yellows, greens and oranges cover almost the entire surface. The blue and white pots cool the foreground, while the children's light dresses punctuate the central axis. The pink and blue roofs finally detach the garden from the overseas sky.

The garden becomes a real family space: children do not pose in front of the flowers, they pass through vegetation of which growth and light are the main subjects.

A central axis deliberately frontal

The driveway, steps and fireplace of the house overlap almost on the same vertical. This firm geometry gives a stable structure to the profusion of flowers.

Children as a measure of the garden

Their presence specifies the scale of the sunflowers and animates the climb towards the house. However, they remain painted in touches, integrated into the light rather than treated like portraits.

A midday light almost without shadow

The yellows dominate and the shadows are reduced to blue or lilac passages. The scene seems heated by a high sun which visually brings all the shots together.

Their mass should not become a uniform hedge. Flowers, leaves and stems overlap in varying directions to vibrate the entire surface.

One of four views very close to the same garden

Monet painted four compositions of the flowered alley in Vétheuil. W684 is the first of this group to include two young children on the steps, after versions without figures.

Jean-Pierre Hoschedé and Michel Monet on the stairs

The two boys belong to the shared home of Vétheuil. Their presence connects the garden motif to the domestic life found by Monet after a difficult financial and family period.

Provenance03

Sold by Monet to Durand-Ruel in February 1882

The gallery acquired the painting directly from the artist on February 9, 1882. It then went through several European and North American collections before its sale at Christie's in 1996.
