The church and the light houses group together in the center left, while two walkers, one of whom carries an umbrella, appear in the tall grass on the right. Painted in 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 60.4 × 79.4 cm is listed under Wildenstein number 596.

Look at the work

The flowery bank leads towards Vétheuil without separating the near from the distant

The Seine enters from the lower left corner and describes a gentle curve in front of the village. On the right, the embankment occupies almost half of the painting: its inclination leads the gaze to the two figures then towards the bell tower, which remains the main vertical accent.

The yellows, greens and reds in the foreground are placed in brief, tight touches. The village receives bluish whites, pinks and calmer grays, while the back hillside loses its contrasts under a clear sky covered in mauve.

The bell tower is not isolated like a monument: it emerges from a continuum of houses, trees and reflections which makes the unity of the site felt.

The light tower stands out in front of the greens of the hillside without heavy outline. A few dark touches are enough to clarify its architecture and set the distance.

Monet places the village on the other bank of the Seine. The low position of the gaze enlarges the meadow and lets the church organize the entire distance.

Registration02

A painting dated 79 but cataloged in 1880

The signature painted at the bottom right bears Claude Monet 79. The reasoned notice and the sales notice nevertheless retain an execution in 1880.

Provenance03

A work passed by Durand-Ruel

The published provenance mentions the acquisition by Durand-Ruel from Young in 1925, then Hugo Perls in 1927 and Siegfried Oestreich in Montreal.
