Claude Monet · The first winter in Vétheuil · The Frick Collection
The village of Vétheuil extends at the foot of a snowy hill, dominated by the dark tower of its church. In the foreground, the Seine partially covered by ice is crossed by two boats loaded with figures. Monet reduces almost the entire scene to whites, blues and grays, but a few browns, reds and greens maintain village life and human presence.

Look at the work
Notre-Dame Church forms the darkest point of the landscape, slightly to the left of the center. Around it, the houses descend towards the bank through a mosaic of gray facades, white roofs and small brown touches. The hill behind the village almost merges with the sky.
Two boats cross the river. The closest, lower left, carries several passengers; the other advances in the middle of a strip of clear water. Plaques of ice and their bluish green reflections occupy the right, while silhouettes wait on the bank.
The snow erases the usual limits, but the boats, figures and the church tower reconstruct a very precise depth.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Seine occupies the bottom, the village forms a dense frieze in the center and the snow-capped hill blends into the sky. These areas are distinguished mainly by the direction of the touch.
Cobalt blue, blue gray and turquoise are used to shape the shadows of snow, walls, water and distances. Their intensity varies to separate the planes without outline.
The tower, the hulls, the passengers and a few trees concentrate the browns and blacks. Few in number, they give the pale landscape its balance and scale.
Reference image
The unique reference corresponds to the 1942.1.146 inventory of the Frick Collection. The 6,320 × 4,848 px file was reduced to 3,000 × 2,301 px, without enlargement, then converted to high definition WebP.
Monet observes Vétheuil from the Lavacourt sector, probably near his workshop boat. The river thus maintains a real depth between the spectator and the village.
The snow mixes cream, very pale pink, gray and blue. These differences show slopes, roofs and patches of ice without resorting to uniform white.
The houses use short, layered touches, while the hill and sky are rubbed more widely. The architecture remains readable without losing the atmosphere.
Documented benchmarks
The Frick Collection keeps this oil on canvas measuring 68.6 × 89.9 cm under inventory 1942.1.146; the Wildenstein catalog gives it the number 507.
The painting dates from 1878 -1879, shortly after the painter's installation in the village. Snow and ice give it a pattern where shapes dissolve in an almost monochrome light.
The boats and groups of figures refer to the passage which connected the two banks. This daily detail gives the vast winter view a discreet but essential activity.
The doctor and collector Georges de Bellio acquired the painting directly from the painter in December 1879. The Frick Collection purchased it in 1942.
