Vétheuil appears at the foot of two hillsides, under a blue sky crossed by pink and cream clouds. The church and houses line up in the distance; in front of them, the Seine and its reflections occupy the left, while a flowery bank advances diagonally from the bottom right. Cows graze under the trees and a few figures liven up the path. Signed at the bottom right, this oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 92.2 cm was painted in 1879. It corresponds to Wildenstein 527.

Look at the work

A very open panorama brings together the water, the village and the hillside without an isolated monument: each element contributes to the same summer light

The nearby bank forms a large green point which enters from the bottom right and leads towards trees, cows and figures. On the left, the water offers a calmer space. These two masses converge towards the village; the church rises slightly above the houses but remains caught in the light tones of the landscape.

The sky occupies almost half of the canvas. Milky blues, pinks and whites are placed there in broad touches, taken up in the reflections of the Seine. On the bank, greens, yellows and blues fragment further: the difference in touch distinguishes air, water and vegetation without separating them by hard contours.

Christie's notice identifies W527 as one of two almost identical views. The other, smaller and probably preparatory, is the Landscape, Vétheuil of the Musée d'Orsay.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The nearby bank gives depth to the panorama

Its wide diagonal gradually reduces the water space and leads directly towards the village. Without this foreground, Vétheuil would appear as a distant frieze placed under the sky.

The village blends into the topography

Houses, bell towers and walls share warm grays, creams and blues with the hillsides. The architecture remains identifiable but seems to belong to the same colorful fabric as the countryside.

Animals and figures measure scale

The cows and small figures on the right bank do not constitute an independent story. Their size specifies the extent of the site and slows down the journey before the village.

Respect the balance between water and flower bank

The Seine must remain widely visible on the left, while the point of vegetation occupies the lower right. Modifying this division would make the oblique depth of W527 disappear.

Color02

Maintain the pale values of the village

The church and houses are not highlighted in dark. Their cream gray and blue keep them in general light and avoid a postcard effect.

Matter03

Preserve the mosaic in the foreground

Small touches of green, yellow, blue and pink give the bank its density. Their variety must remain readable without becoming a succession of regular points.

The village looked down from the south

Monet places his observation point near the road to Mantes, probably from or near his boat-workshop. The view embraces the town, the Seine and the bank in a single panorama.

Version02

The great composition of a twice painted pattern

W527 measures 65.5 × 92.2 cm. A second, smaller canvas, kept at the Musée d'Orsay, covers almost the same site and was able to serve as a preparatory study.

Provenance03

A story dating back to the collector Edmond Decap

The first documented owner is Edmond Decap. The painting then passed through Durand-Ruel and several British collections before entering the Triton Collection Foundation in 1996.
