Artwork description
Claude Monet · Vétheuil · 1880 · W596
From Île Saint-Martin, Monet looks at Vétheuil beyond a curve of the Seine and a bank covered with flowers. The church and the light houses group together in the center left, while two walkers, one of whom carries an umbrella, appear in the tall grass on the right. Painted in 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 60.4 × 79.4 cm is listed under Wildenstein number 596.

Look at the work
The Seine enters from the lower left corner and describes a gentle curve in front of the village. On the right, the embankment occupies almost half of the painting: its inclination leads the gaze to the two figures then towards the bell tower, which remains the main vertical accent.
The yellows, greens and reds in the foreground are placed in brief, tight touches. The village receives bluish whites, pinks and calmer grays, while the back hillside loses its contrasts under a clear sky covered in mauve.
The bell tower is not isolated like a monument: it emerges from a continuum of houses, trees and reflections which makes the unity of the site felt.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The flowery slope rises from the lower right corner towards the village. Its colored density stabilizes the smoother curve of the Seine on the left.
The walkers are tiny, but their dark silhouettes and light parasols give an immediate scale to the grass, the shore and the village.
The light tower stands out in front of the greens of the hillside without heavy outline. A few dark touches are enough to clarify its architecture and set the distance.
Reference image
The single reference image is preserved at its native definition of 1024 × 763 px then encoded as a real WebP. No artificial enlargement was applied.
It must remain visible until the village without becoming a uniform band; its violets and light reflections integrate it into the sky.
The reds and yellows of the embankment must remain punctual. A continuous color would make the vibration of the meadow disappear.
Their small scale is essential: they must neither get lost in the grass nor take on the importance of a genre scene.
Documented benchmarks
Christie's sales notice documents Vétheuil seen from Île Saint-Martin, oil on canvas from 1880, 60.4 × 79.4 cm, signed and dated Claude Monet 79 lower right, Wildenstein catalog 596.
Monet places the village on the other bank of the Seine. The low position of the gaze enlarges the meadow and lets the church organize the entire distance.
The signature painted at the bottom right bears Claude Monet 79. The reasoned notice and the sales notice nevertheless retain an execution in 1880.
The published provenance mentions the acquisition by Durand-Ruel from Young in 1925, then Hugo Perls in 1927 and Siegfried Oestreich in Montreal.
