A large round tree dominates a clear path and a small yellow house, under a blue sky covered with visible brushstrokes.
Look at the work
A road to Arles condensed into a few shapes
Van Gogh chose a section of Avenue de Montmajour, northeast of Arles. The path enters from the lower left corner, turns in front of the large tree then leads to a low house; the fields extend behind it to a very low horizon line.
The tree, almost circular, occupies as much space as the architecture and seems to protect the house. Its brown, green and yellow foliage is constructed by a multitude of short touches. The sky, on the contrary, receives large blue and white movements which give air to this vertical format.
Van Gogh transforms an ordinary roadside into a monumental composition: a tree, a house and a path are enough to organize the full depth.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The strength of F567 comes from the scale ratio between the mass of the tree, the small house and the luminous opening of the path.
An almost round tree
The compact crown fills the upper left quadrant. Its irregular contours and colorful touches avoid the effect of a flat geometric shape.
A curved path
The clear path widens in the foreground then narrows in front of the house. The yellow, cream and pale blue lines follow its movement.
A landmark house
The yellow wall and red roof form a warm little accent under the tree. This building fixes the depth and balances the vast blue sky.

- The round and irregular silhouette of the large tree
- The little yellow house with the red roof
- The curve and widening of the path
- The very low horizon line
- The great blue and white movements of the sky
