Look at the work

The bouquet dominates a table organized by fruit

The vase occupies the central axis and carries an asymmetrical bouquet which extends strongly to the left. White, red, pink, yellow and blue flowers fit together without merging. A large dark area around the bouquet reinforces their shine.

On the table, the basket tilts slightly towards the viewer and releases several fruits. Apples, pears and grapes are distributed on either side of the vase. The folds of the tablecloth lead the eye towards the bottom while connecting the scattered objects.

This still life is not based on a uniform finish: Monet changes touch to differentiate tablecloth, fruit, ceramic and petals.

The floral mass widens on the left while a few stems stretch to the right. The central vase stabilizes this irregular balance.

Keys adapted to each material

The Getty distinguishes a broad and flat painting in the tablecloth, more sketched in the apples and short, tight, in the petals.

The whites change depending on the material

Petals and tablecloth do not share the same white: the flowers are thicker and more colorful, the fabric wider and bluish gray.

The vase remains partially hidden

The bouquet and fruits pass in front of its shape. Its blue patterns must be readable without attracting the eye more than the flowers.

The fruits bear similar reflections

Greens, reds and yellows change on contact with the tablecloth, the vase and the shadows. No fruit is treated as an isolated local color.

Monet produced the composition in a workshop during his stay in the summer and autumn of 1869 in Bougival, where he also carried out his outdoor research on the Seine.
